POMPEJI ~~~ AND ~~~ HERCULANEUM are my favorite places in Napoli!
Just a few miles outside of town, easyly to be reached by the suburban railway.
POMPEJI was a very rich city, one of the biggest metropoles of that time around 62 b.c. when it was destroyed by vulcanic eruptions of Mount VESUVIO. Pompeji had been forgotten for many hundred of years, but about 300 years ago they started to dig it out of the ashes, and they still find a lot of new things and houses every year.
This an arceological town, where you could walk throu almost like the old romans did.
See the original streets and "roman Zebra-Crossings" to cross the streets, with stones, a bit higher than the street, with a bit of distance to each other, so that carriages could go throu, and pedestrians could cross the street without having to step into the dirt of the street.
On the sidewalk you see holes, where ropes could be fixed, so horses... could not run away
see old "roman restaurants" with original amphores, where food was stored and heated up see oilmills with the original millstones enter houses with wonderful atriums, mosaiques on the floor, and great paintings on the wall...
See an old farmhouse, with original farmers instruments!
The famous author and poet Johann Wolfgang v. Goethe (Dr.Faustus)was here on his famous "italian journey" at about 1760 .
See the grand circus and stadion, the theatre.
HERCULANEUM is a rather small place. But is has some unique things to show:
See ORIGINAL ROPES,HOUSES OF WOOD, LOAF OF BREAD, BED, PARAVANT.. (I am not sure about the engl.word- you put it in the room, to divide a part of it , or to change clothes behind it) - and you will see, that lots of things have the same look since thousands of years!!!
In Herculaneum they have also great SPAS, and a water heating BEHIND THE TILES ! |
