Better buy your tickets for the bus or subway in advance at a newspaper-shop.
Plenty of the machines in the stations are out of order, or require the exact amount of cents, or work only with certain coins, or give out only 5 tickets...
And if you are lucky, there might be an attendant, not speaking any language than italian, and he will explain the situation, but will certainly NOT sell any tickets to you...
