  • VIA APPIA ANTICA -

is situated south of todays towncenter and in some parts it looks still the same as in roman times.

There is a very small part (about 1 Km) completely restricted to pedestrians, but the rest is still used as normal street by lots of cars.

If possible, go there on sunday - as all the street is a pedestrian area then.

  • I took the subway and then the bus to get to the old part of the Via Appia Antica, where you may still see the scratches that were made by the Roman carriages into the original roman stones.

It is also amazing to see how exact the streets were made in width and straight direction.
Via Appia Antica is an area you may spent a whole day without getting bored.

  • You may even see columns, old tombs and statues dating back to the roman times there.
In my opinion it is quite unbelievable, that these buildings have survived more than 2000 years and still look great !

A small part of Via Appia Antica is a pedestrian zone all the time, but a bigger part is off limits for cars ONLY on sundays !

  • There are plenty of wonderful villas surrounded by vast parks.

Some of the villas had been built in that area without permission, but who actually cares, as these landowners obviously have the right friends in the right places...

Sounds like getting a ticket for public transportation is almost more trouble than it's worth. I guess a traveler must just walk their way through rome. Nice reading about your page again.
