Villa Pisani is the biggest and most famous of the villas along the Brenta-canal.
You may visit the park and the interior of the villa, including several famous paintings.
Unfortunately it is not allowed to take photos inside the villa !

Villa Pisani was built for Almoro and Alvise Pisani .
Alvise Pisani was a doge of Venice in 1740 and Villa Pisani saw lots of famous guests, including Napoleon.
Have a look at the impressive atlanti-statues holding the balcony on their head.

Villa Pisani is open from Sep.-march :
09.00 a.m. - 04.00 p.m.
and May & june :
09.00 a.m. - 06.00 p.m.
July & august :
09.00 a.m. - 08.00 p.m.
There are tickets for just the park or the park & a tour through the castle.
And even when you come outside of the opening-times, you may see parts of the park through the gates, like on my picture.

Have a look for the many great details in the park of Villa Pisani.
When you click on my picture, you may see a great spiral stair going around this column, a construction I never saw anywhere else like that before.
This is another sight, you may already see through the fence, without having to enter the park.

A maze was a very popular type of amusement in Baroque times.
This maze built by trees that will not loose their leaves in winter even offers a small tower, where you may watch the others or hopefully get an idea how to be able to escape the labyrinth...

Have a look for the many great details in the facade of Villa Pisani and the other villas along the Brenta-canal.
There is a large carpark close to the villa and the landing-stage for the cruising-boats is just opposite the main entrance.
When on vacation in Venice you may take a small cruiseship and get to Villa Pisani on a fullday-cruise including a lunch in one of the old villas, that had been transfered into a restaurant.

Inside the village of Stra you will see a lot more of interesting Brenta-villas, like this one, just a few hundred meters from Villa Pisani.
Simply take the street along BOTH sides of the Brenta-canal in order not to miss any of these great palaces.

Some of the Villas have their name indicated on a small sign in the front , like this one.
So we know at least the name of this lovely Villa.
In the old times there was of course NO street in front of the Brenta-villas, but simply a lawn and a foregarden next to the canal.

In my opinion this villa - Palazzo Recanati Zuccon - is certainly the most beautiful and best preserved of the smaller Palazzi.
It is not directely in Stra - when I remeber it correctely, but a bit outside, on the street to Venice.

An amazing collection of beautiful old villas. I'm glad to see that the 16th century water-mill is still in use and can be visited. I also like the atmosphere in such places, with the water rushing through and turning the old (mainly wooden?) machinery. | Mikebond Wed Aug 3, 2005 19:49 UTC

The more and more I read about Italy, the more eager I am to go see it in person. Great tips Michael! I can only imagine those villas erected along the canal started polluting the fresh water within no time! Humans are so destructive! |
