  • The jewish Ghetto-area

At around 1320 a.d.-at the time when Marco Polo lived in Venice- Jews had to leave Venice and settle somewhere else. Some years later they have been allowed to live again in Venice, but only inside a small island. The 2 bridges leading to that island were closed and locked at night.

As the place was restricted to that island, you will find the highest houses (up to 7 floors) of Venice on that small island.

is really worth a visit.Only a short distance off the main train station.-

Go on the street direction 'San Marco' and go left directely after the first bridge. You could still see the fixtures of the heavy door that was closed every night to protect the aerea. There are some of the highest houses (up to 6 floors) of Venice.

  • this is one of the many lovely medieval houses that you will see, when taking a walk in one of the side-streets of town.

It is amazing to see they are still in rather good condition and used for everday living.
