Tips 1 - 10 of 10 Ephesus Things to Do

The Celsus Library was the biggest library of its time.
The fassade of the entrance-gate was recently restored by Austrian Archeologists and Sponsors and it became the symbol for the antique Ephesus. It is certainly the building that looks best and most interesting, even though just a rather small part of it is restored, as it was quite a large building in the old times.

Directions: When you enter the excarvation-area on height and walk down the ancient main-street, you will get directely to Celsus-library.

Have a look at the great fassade and the huge collumns...
...and simply try to imagine, how buildings like this one were built in the antique times, long time before the birth of Jesus.
Btw: Ephesus is mentioned several times in the bible. Paulus used to come here and he sent his " letters to the people from Ephesus ", when he was back in Jerusalem

Click on the pic to see the dimensions of the Celsus Library.
The rebuilt fassade is seen on the right, and on the left you may see the size the library had.
Walking here in that remote area of Efesus you may be approached by local people offering you antique fragments for " a good price "
Simply say NO !!
Its a big risk for you when you buy real antiques - and most probably you are cheated with fake things anyway

One of the 7 wonders of the world was also once built here in Ephesus : The TEMPLE OF ARTEMISAnd what you see on my pic is all that is left over of it. The temple is a bit outside of the excarvation-area, and you would certainly pass by it without notice, if your guide would not tell you. Sorry for the bad quality of the photo - it is a scanning of my Super-8-film, that is actually a slide with a size of just 4mmx8mm

The Hadrian's Temple is one of the buildings on the main street of Ephesos, that was rather perfectely reconstructed with its typical arches.

Directions: The temple of Artemis is on the right side of the main street , about halfway between the upper entrance and the beautiful Ephesus library.

This is another pic of the Hadrian's temple, so you may see the dimensions and great columns. Directely behind the temple is still a big hill of un-explored area and it could easily be, thast the rest of the temple will be found there one day. Excavations are taking a long time unfortunately and other parts of town will need it more urgently.

The main street of Ephesus still looks the same as in the ancient times :
The same pavement and side-streets and it is a really very special feeling, when you enter the museum by the upper gate and walk slowly down the street towards the Celsus Library.
This pic is taken from the Celsus Library looking back to the main street

Things To Do: watch out for the details

Have a look for the plenty of great pieces of art, left somewhere in Ephesus at the place, where they were found.
This is a part of a fassade, but the rest of it is not found yet or maybe was robbed or used by locals to build their homes some hundred years ago...
...but you may imagine the beauty of the building as it was once complete

make sure, you will not miss the big amphitheater, where now big concerts are given again by popstars of today on several occasions every year
This pic was taken from the stage, and may see the dimensions of this huge theatre, beeing able to seat some thousands of people. Sorry for the bad quality of the photo - it is a scanning of my Super-8-film, that is actually a slide with a size of just 4mmx8mm

Directions: The big theatre is easy to be found, it is close to Celsus-library and then towards the exit.

Toilet: Ephesus Latrina - ever seen a " group toilet " ??
|
Tip Rating: |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
The Latrina is a marble bench with several holes in it and a stream of water taking away,what-ever falls into the small holes...
...and people were sitting next to each other without any cabins...
...they could actually talk with plenty of people about lots of horses...
I finally found some pics of the Latrina on one of my Super-8 films - that is why the scanning is not really top-quality
