Montevideo Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Uruguay Club
  • Tip Rating:
  • Uruguay Club is the name of this interesting building next to the cathedral Iglesia Matriz. The building dates back to the year 1885 and all you can see of it as a tourist is the beautiful ornate facade. There are several cafes with terraces at "Plaza Constitucion", from where you will be able to see this lovely building.
Dont miss this building, when you are at "Plaza Constitucion" ,
the adress of Urugua Club is :
    Sarandi 584

Off The Beaten Path: the old coastal steamer
  • Tip Rating:
  • This old steam-boat found its "final drydock" at the entrance to the port of Montevideo, nice to look at and lighted at night, so it is some sort of a lighthouse as well, dont miss it, when approaching the port by cruiseship.
You will find this great ship opposite of the mountain that gave Montevideo its name (see my 4th pic!)

Off The Beaten Path: the admirality
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montevideo - the admirality in Montevideo
  • the admirality in Montevideo

  • This building in the port of Montevideo is the admirality. The architecture was not really so very special, but it was interesting to see some exhibits around the car-park-area of that naval building : old anchors, cannons, ship-screws, whaling-harpoons and a lot more. This building is in an area, where only passengers of cruise-ships are allowed to enter, the controls at the gate of the port are quite severe, so have your boarding-pass ready !
Opposite of the admirality you will find Captan Maranda, the sailing - school-ship of the navy of Uruguay.

Off The Beaten Path: Capitan Miranda
  • Tip Rating:
  • Capitan Miranda is obviously the sailing - school-ship for the navy of Uruguay and it will mostly be docked close to the Admirality-building. No problem to approach it and take photographs, several officers had been watching me taking these pics. It was interesting to see a combination of an old wooden ship, certainly more than 100 years old and modern masts made of aluminium, radar etc.

Off The Beaten Path: some interesting machineries in the port
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the port of Montevideo, at the same place as the anchor of the battleship "Admiral Graf Spee" you will see some old machineries like this old steam-powerded crane as well as a lot more anchors and other remains from old ships. It is a nice place for ships-enthousiasts like me and another good argument not to take one of the many free shuttle-buses that offer you to take you to the city (and mainly to shops selling leather-goods there)

Off The Beaten Path: Banco Ingles de Rio de Janeiro
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was nice to see at least these interesting remains of a building obviously dating back to the year 1890, according to the inscription on top of it. Its name is Banco Ingles de Rio de Janeiro / English Bank of Rio de Janeiro. You will see plenty of such buildings in Montevideo, where only the facade was left over, obviously waiting for better times and the money in order to restore it and integrate it into a new building.
The adress of this building is Zabaala 1486, just a few steps from Iglesia de San Francisco

Off The Beaten Path: The Gaucho-museum in Palacio Uriarte de Heber
  • Tip Rating:
  • The museum of the gaucho and Currency / Museo del Gaucho y la Moneda is not far from Plaza Independencia, made inside an old palace - Palacio Uriarte de Heber - built between 1896 and 1897. The adress is : Avda. 18 de Julio 998-1000
Click on my extra photographs and enlarge them in order to see the fine details of this great facade.

Off The Beaten Path: the London-Paris-building
  • Tip Rating:
  • Edificio del London Paris / the London-Paris-building was built in 1908 and it is another one of the many interesting buildings with great architecture along avenida 18 de Julio, at the crossing with Rio Negro street.

I'm glad you liked Montevideo! But it doesn't mean I saw the mountain ... the legend says it meant Monte VI dE-O (the sixth mount from east to west)! Cheers bro!!!

Excellent comprehensive page. Well done! I also walked around the flea market that time on a really hot summer day and was trying to buy sunscreen with USD...

Michael, fantastic page about this busy metropolis. I really like the architecture of Montevideo. My favourite photo is the one of the old coastal steamer. Greetings from snowy Germany.

Thorough and vivid page as usual, Michael! Yes, the mountain isn't so high at your photo that I could say I saw it! Ha-Ha! But you've seen it I'm sure! Happy Easter from Orthodox Russia which have to wait it a month!
