Take a look at this interesting construction :it is the trainstation of Santiago de Chile and it was constructed by Eiffel. I saw it when I passed by it in my transfer-taxi from the airport, I am glad that the driver pointed at it and also drove a bit more slow, so I could take these pics out of the car.

Off The Beaten Path: Holy Santiago de Chile

Tip Rating: |

Holy Santiago gave the name to the city of Santiago de Chile. Holy Santiago is well known in german as Apostel Jakobus / Jacob, and exactely the same person who gave also to Santiago de Compostela in Portugal the name. You will find the small monument for Holy Santiago on the Plaza de Armas, opposite of the cathedral, where it makes a special contrast against the mighty sky-scrapers in its backside.

Biblioteca National, The National Library of Chile is to be found opposite of The church San Francisco and even when you are mostly not able to see it from inside, it is worth to take a look at it from outside, it is just a few steps from cerro Santa Lucia and the Neptun fountain. The National Library is at Plaza Benjamin Vicuna Mackenna, get out at Metro-station: Santa Lucia

Off The Beaten Path: The Japanese Garden

Tip Rating: |

The Japanese Garden is on the foot of Cerro Santa Lucia, at the side of Lastarria and it certainly had seen better times already. It includes a pond, but that was not filled with water anymore in the middle of summer, so the whole Japanese garden was a bit spooky with just stones and a bit of typical garden-architecture.

The Monument to the Indigenous People is quite a strange but interesting sculpture on Plaza de Armas, take a walk around it and take a look at the various strange symbols and details.Especially the backside I did not understand (my 5th photograph) , but maybe that is the sense of, so people start to think...

Off The Beaten Path: a great view-point

Step up the highest view-point on top of Cerro Santa Lucia, even though the steps are a bit worn out at some places, the panorama-view is really worth all the trouble. Santiago is an interesting mixture of modern sky-scrapers and tradional architecture and from nowere else you can see these modern buildings in a better way.

Off The Beaten Path: The monument for Caupolican, the Indio-leader

This is the sculpture of the Mapuche Indian leader, Caupolican, who led his people against Pedro de Valdivia and his conquistadores. Thanks a lot to my VT-friend Wstat, who told me the name of him ! So you will finally see all major parts of chilean history in my main picture: The indio for the time before the European came, then on the left the fortification built by red bricks and finally the modern Chile in the back. From that tower a wide system of paths and steps will take you down to the lower city and to the Neptun-fountain.

Off The Beaten Path: Cerro Santa Lucia : the old cannons

Tip Rating: |

Cerro Santa Lucia used to be the perfect place to defend the city of Santiago and at some places you can still see the old cannons of the medieval fortification. I am not sure wether they are the original or repilcas, in any case they look interesting and worth seeing. The one on my 4th picture you can see only from the highest viewpoint, but the others you can touch or even sit on.

The monument for Gran Capitan Don Pedro de Valdivia is standing in the middle of the small square on top of Cerro Santa Lucia, a great park with a waterfall, some nice benches, a kiosk and a great view over the city of Santiago and its surrounding mountains. b.t.w. Gran Capitan Don Pedro de Valdivia is the same person as on the big monument of Plaza de Armas !

Off The Beaten Path: Iglesia de la Veracruz & the Lastarria area

Iglesia de la Veracruz is the name of this lovely church on my main picture, unfortunately it is locked during the day so I could not take a look inside. You will find it in the centre of the so-called area of "Lastarria" where artists are living and selling their works of art, there are nice cafes and restaurants as well as a fleamarket at least on saturdays. I mainly enjoyed the special architecture of some of the unique buildings there. My photos #2-5 were taken in the street "Villavicencio", opposite of Iglesia de la Veracruz. ------------------------ For Lastarria search on your map for metrostation "Museo Precolombino" from there it is just about 100 meters !
