Valparaíso Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Cristobal Colon in the port
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a small monument for Cristobal Colon / Christoph Columbus in the port of Valparaiso, not far from Plaza Sotomayor. Columbus is quite popular in this part of the world and everybody is aware of the fact that their own history would have been completely different without Columbus and his search for an easy way to India. There is another monument for Columbus in Av. Brasil.

Off The Beaten Path: Club Naval
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Club Naval is one of the many lovely buildings with great architecture along Av. Brasil in a distance of maybe 400 meters from Plaza Sotomayor. Also that pink building next to it looks interesting with great architecture and details. Another good reason to walk instead of taking a taxi or bus when exploring Valparaiso.

Off The Beaten Path: the triumph arch
  • Tip Rating:
  • This triumph arch reminded me a lot of the ones that I saw, built by the romans more than 2000 years ago. But this one in Valparaiso, at the end of Av. Brasil is just a bit older than 100 years and it is dedicated to the local heros, officers of the spanish army who were helping to gain the independance for the state of Chile : O'Higgins , O'Brian and Simpson

Off The Beaten Path: El Cardonal, the mercado of Valparaiso
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a great "mercado" , a markethall also called "El Cardonal" that you will pass by, when walking along of Av. Brasil. It is a pity, that I was there on a sunday afternoon and everything was closed, but I read in my guidebook, that during the week you will find a lot of fruits, meat and flowers there on the ground floor and many great restaurants and small foodstands on the 1st floor.

Off The Beaten Path: great murals
  • Tip Rating:
  • I saw these great murals when walking through Valparaiso at the beginning of Av. Brasil, just about 200 meters from Plaza Sotomayor. Murals might even be not the right expression for these great works of art, that are rather paintings by a great artist.

Off The Beaten Path: Consulado de França / the French Consulate
  • Tip Rating:
  • Consulado de França / The French Consulate is one of my favorite buildings along Av. Brasil. You will find it at a place in a distance of about 1 km from Plaza Sotomayor, a building with an interesting architecture, lovely balconies, columns and even a few palmtrees in front of it. Even more interesting than the French Consulate are the 2 other buildings in the same block : see my next tip for these lovely Art-Nouveau-buildings !

Off The Beaten Path: Art Nouveau next to the French Consulate
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dont miss these wonderful houses in Art Nouveau-style next to the French Consulate in Av. Brasil. They are simply great and all of the fine details add to the great appearance. It really would be a pity to just take the bus or a taxi, when going to the city of Valparaiso and having no chance at all to take a closer look at these architectural beauties !

Off The Beaten Path: Cristobal Colon at Av. Brasil
  • Tip Rating:
  • The monument of Christoph Columbus / Cristobal Colon at Av. Brasil is a lot more impressive than the one inside the port-area of Valparaiso. Here in Av. Brasil Columbus is in good company with other heros of the history of South America, whose monuments you will see one after the other along this lovely boulevard until you finally get to the triumph-arch for O'Higgins and his helpers.

Off The Beaten Path: the vinyards
  • Tip Rating:
  • Chile is famous for its great wines and on the way from Santiago de Chile to Valparaiso you will pass by plenty of the vinyards along of the highways. At many of these vinyards you are able to taste the wine directely at the producers and take home some bottles, and tour-operators in Valparaiso and Santiago will offer such tours to these vinyards.

Off The Beaten Path: the Naval Casino
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Naval Casino is to be found in the backpart of Plaza Sotomayor in a backpart of the lovely blue- and white building of the Naval headquaters.
I especially enjoyed the fine details of the facade on top of the entrance-gate with coats of arms and other decorations.

A thorough and vivid page, as usual! Plaza Sotomayor looks very impressive. Pity you are not allowed to take a look inside the Naval Building there. I also liked art Nouveau next to the French Consulate. Thanks Michael for the virtual tour!

Michael, Valparaiso looks like a beautiful city in which to wander, especially along Av. Brasil !! Very colourful photos and I think I would have a great time down on the waterfront looking at the ships!
