an old washing-machine in Haberton - Puerto Harberton

an old washing-machine in Haberton

an old washing-machine

Did you ever see such an old washingmachine ? You will find it in the shed of Estancia Haberton and during the guided tour you will be shown how it was working !
The clothes were put inside the wooden part and then this part was turned around by hand untill the washing was done.
The 2 rolls on top were used for ironing.

Amalia B & the Condor in Estancia Haberton - Puerto Harberton

Amalia B & the Condor in Estancia Haberton

Amalia B & the Condor

"Amalia B" is the name of this giant rowing-boat that was built in Estacia Haberton and it was used for races around the bay of Haberton, just like in the tradtions of the races between Oxford and Cambride in Great Britain. Amalia B was mostly the winner and nowdays she has her own shed that will be open for visitors on the guided tour through Estancia Haberton. The giant condor above the boat is worth seeing as well, even though you will not be able to enter the shed, but may just take a look from the open door.

the sheep-shaving machine in Haberton - Puerto Harberton

the sheep-shaving machine in Haberton

the sheep-shaving machine

A lot of years ago this farm had thousands of sheep and all of them were shaved inside of this shed. There was a diesel-engine giving the power for the machines and that power was transferred by the wheels in my main photo to the shavers.Every shaver had a seperate exit for the sheep that he had finished and he was payed by the number of sheep, so you might understand now what that strange construction is in my last photo : the labyrinth is not for the sheep going in, but somebody counted the sheep coming out of the different gates, before they left the farm again.

cars and tractors - Puerto Harberton
cars and tractors

Both the Willy's Jeep and the Fergusson tracktor are still in use, especially in the wintertime, that is from May till October in this part of the world. We came in the southern summer and everything was a bit dusty but I guess in wintertime you would be glad for such a vehicle, as it is the only way to drive anywhere for the people living in Estancia Haberton.

the big shed - Puerto Harberton
the big shed

The large shed is an interesting place to explore during the guided tour through Estancia Haberton. You will see a lot of machineries of the past and you will also realize how important it is at the "end of the world" to have a good equipment and be able to improove your conditions of living. After all, the next supermarket is about 2 hours to drive to from there, and it wintertime you wont get there without a lot of trouble.

the interior of dead trees - Puerto Harberton
the interior of dead trees

When driving through Tierra del Fuego / Fireland you will see millions of dead trees standing in the woods and you might wonder, what made all of them die. While taking the guided tour through Estancia Haberton you will see such a trunk of a tree, that bugs and other insects were killing from inside, while the tree does not look dead from outside at all.
It is also the kind of nature in Fireland that makes things last longer and so the trees will not fall apart, but will look fresh also after several decades in the natural surrounding.

the cemetery of Estancia Haberton - Puerto Harberton

the cemetery of Estancia Haberton

the cemetery of Estancia Haberton

There is a small cemetery up on the hill, high above the farmhouse and you will be taken there , when attending the guided tour. You normally cannot enter the cemetery itself, but at least you will be able to take a look over the fence.
In case that you come on your own : walk uphill from the large carparking, you will find a path uphill through the grass, enter the gate of that small wood and the cemetery is what you will see right away there !

tents of the local native tribes - Puerto Harberton
tents of the local native tribes

This is a replica of a tent like it was used by the local tribes, before the white settlers arrived in Tierra del fuego / Fireland and this tent is part of the guided tour, when you are visiting Estancia Haberton..
These tribes were water-nomads, travelling from one place to the other and they were dressed only with thin furs all year long. Just think of the icy winds that will blow there even in summertime and you might understand, that they were eating only meat and fish and they even had a different ordinary body-temperature of over 38 degrees celsius ( human beeings normally will have 36,8 degrees and everything above 37 is feever and you have to stay in bed with such a temperature) These tribes completely died out shortly after the arrival of the white settlers, partly because they got diseases that they were not used to, partly because the white men were hunting there as well and did not leave enough food for the native tribes.
