Oberammergau is a small town 20 Km north of Garmisch Partenkirchen. In Oberammergau you will see plenty of houses with paintings on the outside-walls. They are called " Lueftlmalerei " and date back to the the 18th century, when rich farmers tried to show their prosperity by these decorations.
For more pics and infos - please have a look on my Oberammergau-page !

Ettal is a small village in the very south of Bavaria, close to Garmisch Partenkirchen and Oberammergau. In 1330 the monastery was founded and rebuilt in baroque style during the 17th century. Do not miss the great interior, with excellent paintings on the ceiling and the walls, and a lot of golden ornaments, that make this church really special. There is a big parking right in front of the monastery that may be visited freely any time during the day.
There are more infos and pics about it on my Ettal-page !

Things To Do: Füssen / Fuessen

Fuessen is a small town on the south-border of Bavaria. Mainly the tourists go there in order to see the famous castles of "mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who rather invested his (and Bavaria's) money into great and pittoresque castles instead of weapons... Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are just 6 Km off Fuessen.
Füssen is also well known for its great castle - seen on my pic - the monastery of Mang and lots of lovely baroque houses in the old town of Fuessen -reade more about it on my Fuessen-page !

The monastery Mang in Fuessen dates back to the medieval times and was finally rebuilt in Baroque style. The monastery was built close to the castle of Fuessen and you may see the castle-tower in the background of my picture !

Take a few minutes and have a look inside the great monastery Kloster Mang. No entrence-fee and no other restrictions except not to disturb a church-service. This church is really worth a few minutes and enjoy the great paintings and ornaments.

Things To Do: Castle Hohenschwangau

Hohenschwangau is the castle, where "mad" King Ludwig spent his childhood, and inspired by the plenty of paintings on the walls inside of Hohenschwangau he became interested in their stories and legends. Lateron , when he built his new castles he got similar paintings there, but much bigger, and he even built grottos into huge buildings, simply to perform a certain scene of a legend with orchestra, singers and actors...
Hohenschwangau is certainly the more beautiful and more interesting castle than Neuschwanstein - BUT most of the tourists will never visit it...

Things To Do: Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein is one of the very top destinations of Bavaria and even Europe. The castle was built by king Ludwig II of Bavaria, and shortly after it was finished, the kind died under strange circumstances. He spent just 9 days inside the castle, that was opened to the public already a few days after his death, as the state of Bavaria needed a lot of money to pay for the castles of King Ludwig.
There are a lot more pics and infos on my Neuschwanstein-page !

Wieskirche is a rather large church, surrounded by a few houses only.
It started all with a miracle in 1740 and since then lots of pilgrims come to this lovely church, that is even a bit over-loaded with ornaments, paintings and frescoes.
When driving by car from Munich towards Fuessen, you will pass by it, it is just 6 Km off the regular road.

"Knoking on heaven's door " is one of the fresco-themes on the ceiling of Wies-kirche. All of the church is painted in that great style, and the high windows add a lot to the atmoshere, when the sun shines in. Wies and its church will need a minimum-stay of maybe 30 minutes - it will be an impression, you will never forget !

Things To Do: Linderhof Castle
|
Tip Rating: |
 |
|
|
|

Schloss Linderhof was the smallest castle of "mad" king Ludwig of Bavaria. It was also the only one that he could finish and spend some time there. The castle is surrounded by a great park with several pavillions like the Maurish Kiosk with the golden dome, that you may see on my pic-combination. Linderhof is also the ONLY castle of Ludwig, where you may take pics inside ( but without flash and tripod)
There are a lot more pics and infos on my Linderhof-page !!
