  • Restaurant Name: Ochsenbraterei

This is my favorite place to eat on Oktoberfest.
Ochsenbraterei is one of the biggest traditional tents and it is famous for roasting a whole oxen .

Favorite Dish: Have a look on my picture, everything might be easily watched by the customers. They will need more than 1 ox every day, and you may even have a look for a sign with the name of the ox, that was roasted and cut into pieces today...

  • Restaurant Name: Augustiner

Augustiner is one of the most beautiful traditional inns in Munich. It is situated in the pedestrian area and has this wonderful " beergarden " in the back of the building.
I was there in october, and it was a bit too cold to sit outside, but in summer it will be hard to get any of these tables.

Favorite Dish: The local food with Knödel and a fresh beer

Bratwurstglöckle is my favorite place to get some Bratwurst or other sausages on Oktoberfest.

Favorite Dish: In general any kind of food is really expensive on Oktoberfest, so be prepared to pay more than normally.

  • Restaurant Name: Fisch Witte on Viktualienmarkt Munich

Viktualienmarkt is the very best ( and most expensive )place to buy any kind of food.
Everything is delivered freshly every day, and all the famous cooks of the jet-set-restaurants in Munich will buy their food there.

Favorite Dish: All sorts of fishes are available, fresh to prepare at home, or to taste directely there at the bar.

Hofbräuhaus: In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus

  • Restaurant Name: Hofbräuhaus

Hofbräuhaus might even be the most famous restaurant / inn in the world.
"Hof" is the german word for the Royal court, and "Hof-Bräu" was the beer drunk at the court by the king and his guests, so it certainly was the very best beer in the country.

Favorite Dish: There is a great restaurant on the 2nd floor , (in Europe we would call it 1st floor ;-) with great cuisine and of course the famous beer.
Simply take these few steps upstairs for a great dining experience.
If you just want to drink some beer, have a look for my next tip :
    Hofbräu - Schwemme

  • Restaurant Name: Hofbräuhaus - Schwemme

This is what you will see, when you will not walk up 1 stair in Hofbräuhaus, but simply walk in:
"Schwemme" is the official name for this place, where people get their beer and a more simply kind of food, than on the floors above.

Favorite Dish: In my opinion this place looks wonderful, when you are able to see these arcades shortly before they close, and when you are lucky and the porter will still let you in for a picture.
During the day they have some music there, loud and drunken people, it has a certain smell and dust...

  • Restaurant Name: Ratskeller München

Ratskeller in Munich, just inside the cellars of the "Neues Rathaus" am Marienplatz, far underneath the "Glockenspiel" (chimes)
They have several larger and smaller siderooms, all of them furnished in a different, lovely way, with a really great athmosphere.

Favorite Dish: There was a time, when I once had a side-job there, many years ago. They have a different menu every day and offer plenty of great local and international specialities.
Reservation is normally not necessary, BUT it might be, if you are just 2 or 3 persons, you will be placed on a large table, where others are eating already.

Beim Sedlmayr is a nice restaurant in Bavarian style. It once belonged to Walter Sedlmayr and was opened just a short time before he was murdered.

Favorite Dish: This is a place where ordinary people go and sometimes even Bavarian Schiki-Mickies...

In Kaufhof on Karlsplatz / Stachus you may go by lift or escalators to the 6th floor, where you ahve a great self-service-restaurant with a great view on Karlsplatz,Frauenkirche and a lot more.

What makes me angry every time I am there is the fact, they charge quite a lot, when you want to powder your nose...

Favorite Dish: The food there is really great, and what is the best for the tourists - most dishes are shown with photos, so you see in advance, what to expect, even if your German is not so very good.
Potatoes, rice etc will be ready, but mostly the meat will be prepared freshly in front of your eyes.
They also have a great variety of cakes and icecreams in the afternoon and every day they have a cheap meal and a cheap "cake&coffe-offer"

This is one of the very best (and unfortunately also most expensive ) places I remember for delicate cakes, pastries and sweets.

Favorite Dish: "Baumkuchen" is their most favorite cake :
It is hard to explain, as the cake is somehow backed around a stick, and thin layers of cake follow thin layers of chocolate, and finally, when you take out the middle-stick and cut the cake it looks like a trunk of a tree with plenty of year-rings.

"Hefezopf" , "Dredner Stollen" "Mohnstrudel" were my other favorits - much more expensive than anywhere else, and also much better.

Hey globetrott, great Bavaria page! I am planning to drive there this August and wondered how easy it is to drive on the Deutsche Alpenstrasse on a large SUV with a large caravan in tag.
