Off The Beaten Path: die "alte Post" - the old post office

in one of the side streets on the town-square of Melk you see the "alte Post" - it once was the place, where to post-horses were changed and travellers had the possibilty to get refreshments and maybe stay over night.
The " Alte Post " is still a restaurant and hotel today and is mainly interesting because of it's great and interesting fassade.

look at this unique fassade - the building looks a bit oversized, but as Melk was an important town for schools for so many centuries, and as horse-carriages had to take the mail from one town to the other, at some places the horses had to be changed...

Off The Beaten Path: The Pavillion of the monestary

When you visit the monestary, you may choose between tickets with or without guided tour - and you may also include the visit to the "Garden" for about 1-2 Euro extra.
There you will see a great baroque garden and this pavillion, with great paintings inside
and these strange big figures in front of the pavillion had been part of an extra-exhibition - a bit strange in combination with the pavillion - but they will be gone after the summer 2002...

all rooms of the pavillion are covered with fancy paintings that make you dream of exotic places
and there is also a great self-service-restaurant

There are great cakes in the cafeteria and rather cheap - and I was the only guest there, while the restaurant in the monestary was crowded by busloads of people who obviously were not interested in paying the extra-charge for the "Garden"

Hi Michael, I agree with you. It is a real must see in Austria. Loved your pics and infos. The library is also my favorite place there. BTW, the "strange figures in front the pavillion" were still there last year :o) |
