The MEDIEVAL TOWNSQUARE consists ONLY of GOTHIC,BAROQUE and ROCCOCO HOUSES !
There is NOT A SINGLE MODERN BUILDING on the main square.

In medieval times,STEYR was the only town in Austria that was alowed to produce scyths, knifes and other goods made from IRON.
About 50 Km from Steyr there is the so called "Erzberg" -
a mountain consisting completely of iron.The only way to transport this iron through the mountainious landscape of Austria was the river "ENNS", that runs through STEYR and enters the Danube 40 Km later.

The iron was brought to Steyr, was unloaded here and after the production of various goods, it left again to be transported into the whole world.
These facts made STEYR the wealthiest town in Austria at about 1500-1700 a.d. and the 2nd biggest town of Austria.

"Sternhaus" on Stadtplatz is one of the most beautiful buildings of Steyr in my eyes

"Bummerlhaus" is the oldest building on the main square / Hauptplatz
