Venus von Willendorf is a small sculpture that was found in 1908 in Willendorf in the Wachau , during the construction of the railway.
This early beauty was made 28.000 years ago and is one of the earliest works of art in the world, showing a human beeing.
Inside the village ( 11 Km west of Dürnstein ) you may see a large replica of the sculpture and the place, where it was found.
The sculpture itself is just 11 cm high and may bee seen now in the Museum of Natural-History in Vienna

Braunau am Inn is a small town of 8000 inhabitants on the German/Austrian border. ( about 70 Km north of Salzburg).
Braunau is well known for lots of lovely houses on the mainsquare, and a great townhall (on the left, below on my pic ), 2 old towngates and a really interesting church with plenty of great works of art.
When driving on the highway Passau-Linz, you will pass by Braunau about 20 Km past Passau.

Ried im Innkreis is a town most tourists will skip, as they mostly do not know , why to go there. If you love baroque churches - THIS is THE place to go !!! This church looks rather simple from outside, but it is absolutely great from inside ! All walls and the ceiling are covered with paintings and ornaments on a special pastell-toned ground. Everything fits and matches to a perfect work of art ! Go there during the day, the church is open for visitors without entrance-fee.
Also the town-square looks interesting with lots of colorful baroque houses.
Ried im Innkreis has it's own train-station (www.oebb.at) and is situated 8 Km off the highway A1 Passau-Linz (40 Km west of Linz)

Spitz an der Donau is in a distance of about 5 Km from Dürnstein. The village offers plenty of hotels and restaurants and is also famous for it's wonderful church. The church dates back to the 14th century and has plenty of great paintings and sculptures, BUT the artists are unknown, as during one of the many wars in the medieval times all documents have disappeared.
In Spitz you also have the possibility to cross the Danube on a car-ferry .
Spitz has its own train-station ( www.oebb.at )

LINZ - Pöstlingberg / Poestlingberg is a good opportunity to see the alpine panorama - these mountains are in a distance of about 100 Km and on a clear day I may recommend to take the tram " Pöstlingberg - bahn " ( it is the steepest adhesion-tram in the world ) and spend the day on top of the mountain - they also have great restaurants there and a famous church and an fairy-tale-train for small children and people "young at heart"

There is NO entrance fee and you may enter the museum any time you want - only if you want to go into any of the buildings and see the great interior of the old farmhouses, you have to stick to certain times, when a guard is around - and it is still free of charge... . Stadt Haag - somtimes simply called Haag - is about 10 Km from my hometown STEYR

Enns got the Stadtrecht already about 960 A.D. . "Stadtrecht" means certain priviledges (mainly regarding taxes), only a town would have. . Enns is situated about 20 Km south of LINZ

Many mountains in the Austrian Alps are covered with snow most of the year and whenever the weather is fine you may see these mountains - mostly 3000-3700 meters high - already from great distances. Like here in Sierning, 10 Km west of my hometown STEYR
