|
Mondsee is a small town and also the name of a lake, about 25 Km east of Salzburg. The town is well known by tourists, as the church was once used as a wedding-church in the famous movie "Sound of Music". But the town offers also a lot more interesting things : There is the old castle, that is partly used as a hotel today, a lovely village with great colorfull houses and a museum-village including some old wooden farmhouses and a water-mill. Mondsee might be an easy stop-over, when you drive the Autobahn from Salzburg to Vienna.

Things To Do: The former KZ in Mauthausen

Tip Rating: |

|
In Mauthausen you may see the former KZ ( Konzentrationslager ) of the Nazis !
Mauthausen is about 20 Km east of Linz, and the former KZ was recently restored and is open for visitors. You will need strong nerves to see all this, as already when entering the first court ( on top of my pic ) you may get an idea of the atmosphere of the KZ. The ovens were rather small in Mauthausen, as the prisoners had to work so very hard carrying big stones up the " stairs of death " ( on the left of my pic ), that most of them were killed by the hard work and the treatment by the guards...

Ried im Innkreis is a town of about 30ooo inhabitants, about halfway from Passau to Wels. It is famous for its lovely baroque houses on the main square and especially for the interior of the church, totally decorated with golden ornaments above the walls that are painted in light pastel colors.
The interior was made by Johann Georg Schwanthaler and other members of this famous family of wood-carvers and sculptors.

Melk monastery is easily to be visited, as it is conveniently situated just 5 Km off the Highway A1 Linz-Vienna. Melk is also a train-station, where plenty of trains will stop regularily.
Take a tour through the monastery in order to see the famous marble-room and the library with frescoes by Paul Trooger and the great baroque staircases.
