There are plenty of pics and tips on my Austria-pages

Fondest Memory: Austria is part of the EU + Schengen States + €uro

General Tips: STEYR -and it's unique townsquare
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: on Stadtplatz you will see ONLY houses in Roman-, Gothic-, Baroque- and Roccoco-style.

Steyr was lucky in WW II - although it was one of the centers of weapon-productions - but when the Allied Forces wanted to bomb Steyr in 1945 it was foggy and the bombs went down somewhere else... ;-)

General Tips: STEYR - the baroque Town hall
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: This is the town-hall and also the seat of the Tourist-information

It is the most beautiful baroque town-hall in Austria - simply have a look for the wonderful ornaments and statues on top

General Tips: St.MICHAEL - in der Wachau
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: with it's unique church: It is a mixture of a castle and a church. On top of the church-tower there is no roof, but a platform, where gun-men could shoot at enemies.
    .
and it seemed to be a necessity in the old times, so the farmers got protection inside the churchwalls and could defend themselves, as the enemies often used the Danube for transportation of goods and troops

General Tips: KREMS an der Donau
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: Krems an der Donau is a really nice little town, with plenty of baroque and roccoco houses. Krems is also the centre of vinyards in the Wachau.
    .
Krems is situated approx. in the middle between Vienna and Linz

    General Tips: Schloss Grafenegg
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: Schloss Grafenegg is about 10 km west of Krems, not directy on the Danube, but really worth a visit.30 years ago I lived in that aerea and still remember this castle, with all glasses broken and the building in a very bad condition. I was told, that the russian soldiers burnt all wooden things - floors as well as ornaments after th 2nd WW. Then in 1968 the owner of the castle, called Fürst Metternich started to rebuild and restore the castle, and it looks really great today. They have big exhibitions there and conventions and every christmas they have a weekend with traditional austrian x-mas-songs...
I made a special travelogue about this castle !

    General Tips: Schloß SCHÖNBÜHEL
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: Schloss Schönbühl is situated just a few km after MELK.This castle could not be seen from the left shore of the Danube. You could see it only from a ship, or if you take the street on the right shore of the Danube. And it could also be seen, from a distance, standing on the bridge of Melk.
