Martin von Wagner Museum of the University of Wuerzburg is one of the various museums that you may find inside one of the side-wings of the Residenz and the best of it is that these collections may be visited free of charge, but unfortunately only for a few hours daily, eighter in the morning or the afternoon, so you need to spend some time in Wuerzburg in order to be able to see them all. I came in the morning, that is why I saw the painting-collection, see my other pics
Martin von Wagner Museum is open for visitors : Gemaeldegalerie (the paintings - see my pics) : Tuesday - Saturday : 09.30 a.m.-12.30p.m. --- Antikenabteilung : Tue-Sat. 02.00-05.00p.m. --- Graphic collections : Tue+Thu: 04.00-06.00p.m. Sundays : alternate openings of the painting-collection and the Antikensammlung : 09.30-12.30 Free entrance, BUT always closed on Mondays !!

Conti - Hof is just a bit outside the main tourists-streams but it looks interesting with its great facade in white with red bricks and that ornate small extra-tower, that shows some interesting sculptures and great decorations - see also my other photographs ! This house got its name by the noble family "von Contus" and it was built in 1600 by Domherr Julius Ludwig Echter von Mespelbrunn (Mespelbrunn is a beautiful watercastle, I also made a page about it) . Since the year 1817 this building is the seat of the Bishop of Wuerzburg. You may see this great building just from outside, bt I think it is worth to take a closer look !

The Kreuzgang of the St.Kilian-Dom is worth seeing as well - you can enter it through one of the doors inside the church and then you can take a walk along beautifully decorated tomb-stones, mainly of the baroque times. It was an honor to be burried there so close to the church, in many cases this priviledge was given to noble people who were able to give high donations to the monastery... No entrance-fee or other restrictions : you may enter and walk around as long as the church is open !

Lusamgaertchen is the name of some remains of a cloister dating back to the year 1180 and there you will find the tomb of Walther von der Vogelweide, a well-known singer of medieval times, who used to travel from one royal palace to the other and sing for the royalties of that time. Some of the old arches still show ornate decorations and sculptured reliefs, it would be a pity to miss it ! The entrance to Lusamgaertchen is from Martinstrasse next to the Neumuenster. No entrance-fee and no restrictions, just go there and enjoy !

Augustinerkirche of today was built first for a Dominican monastery that dated back to the year 1275. In 1741 it was partly rebuilt in baroque style by the famous architect Baltasar Neumann with excellent stucco-works by Antonio Bossi, only the great gothic chorus still shows some gothic remains. You will find Augustinerkirche at Schoenbornstrasse / Dominikanerplatz 2 You can enter it freely and without restrictions during the day !

Off The Beaten Path: Kaepple / the pilgrim-church at Nikolausberg

Tip Rating: |

Käppele is the local name for the lovely pilgrim-church close to the castle Marienberg. It was also built after the plans of Balthasar Neumann between 1748 and 1752. Already in 1650 there was a small chapel at this place and several miracles happened in that small chapel, so it became a popular pilgrim-chapel for the people of that area. The traditional way to the "kaepple" is by foot along a pilgrim-path with 14 stations with life-size sculptures. In case that you dont have enough time to step up, take your car or take a look from Marienberg, as I did !

Klanggarten is a smaller part of the giant park of the Residenz in Wuerzburg. It seems to have a great acustic and plenty of signposts led me there, BUT I could not find anything special there... In any case the rest of the park is really worth a visit and you certainly need 1 hour at least to explore all of it. the park was rebuilt several times and the way it looks today it dates back to 1755. The park of the Residenz is open untill sundown at least till 08.00p.m. ! No entrancefee !

wabIV Wed Jun 10, 2009 02:58 UTC Thank you for sharing a few highlights of Wurzburg with us. I attended the American High School there and Lived in Kitzingen. I treasure the memories. Both cities are beautiful and filled with history and character. | flyingscot4 Tue Mar 10, 2009 03:04 UTC Great stuff about Würzburg, Michael. It takes a "real" German or Austrian to hit the high points of any Austrian or German city, especially in an area like Franken. I'll be in Würzburg in a couple of weeks and really needed the "refresher" course. Thanks | Kuznetsov_Sergey Thu Nov 29, 2007 20:48 UTC Thanks Michael for showing us highlights and hidden paths of Wuerzburg - one of the most interesting cities in Bavaria in my opinion. I've been there once and even have made a page, but in a hurry. I want to rebuild it one day. | lotharlerch Mon Nov 19, 2007 22:47 UTC Hoffentlich geht sich im Frühling eine Frankenreise aus - Nürnberg, Bamberg, Würzburg, mit Bratwurst und Bocksbeutel. |
