Malé Island is a peacefull place and all of the island is covered by buildings. Male is the capital of the Maledives, an island that is about 1 km long and 2 km wide and more than 65000 people are living there.

Male Island is great for a stop-over of maybe 1 day,
BUT as a place for a bathing-vacation it is
a waste of time and money !
Lots of other islands in the Maledives are better for that !

Michael, I can see that Male Island does have it's limitations as a tropical destination! Like you, I prefer something with a bit more depth to it! Excellent tips on how the locals react and also the effects of global climate change.

Sad to think that these islands might someday disappear beneath the waters -- but I think that is a very real possibility.
