Chiemsee is quite a large lake and it has 3 big islands in it : Herrenchiemsee - also called Herreninsel Frauenchiemsee - also called Fraueninsel and Krautinsel / cabbage-island, where the ladies from the monastery grow their vegetables. When you click on my pic, you may see the dimensions of the islands and of the castle and park of King Ludwigs great castle.

Bavaria's "mad" King Ludwig II bought this island in 1873 and started to build his most expensive castle. He tried to build a "New Versailles" and copied some parts of it's architecture and park.

Things To Do: great fountains - like in Versailles
|
Tip Rating: |

|
King Ludwig also wanted to have great fountains in front of his castle, just similar to the ones in Versailles !
The fountains will be turned on for a few minutes every half hour in summer, as long as the castle is open:
April-Sept.: 09.00 a.m. - 05.00 p.m. and Oct.-March 10.00 a.m.-04.00 p.m. Open daily during all of the year !

Things To Do: a castle for 16 Millions of Goldmark in 1885

The castle was never finished, as the king had too many expensive ideas BUT not enough money. The unfinished castle finally costed 16 Millions of Goldmark - an incredible amount of money for that time !

Things To Do: the large hall of mirrors
|
Tip Rating: |

|
The large hall of mirrors is the highlight of every castle-tour through Herrenchiemsee , and with a total length of 98 meters it is even a bit larger than the one in Versailles !
Only GUIDED tours are available, and it is a pity, I was there too late to take such a tour.
But the park & its great fountains are free of charge.

Georg Dollmann and Julius Hoffmann were the architects of the castle and Karl von Effner was responsible for the great architecture of the castle - gardens.
Building the castle needed 7 years ( 1878-1885) and the king finally lived there for just 9 days.

Things To Do: take your time when walking through the park
|
Tip Rating: |

Take your time, when walking through the castle-park. I simply had just 20 minutes there, as I took the last ship going to the island, and so I had only about 20 minutes at the castle to take all these pics. Walking to the castle and back will be another 20 minutes each direction.
But at least I did not have to share the park with plenty of other visitors, who would be walking into my pics...

Things To Do: the strangest fountain in the park
|
Tip Rating: |

The first fountain when coming from the ship-station is also the strangest, when I think about the sculptures :
a row of lots of turtles and a few crokodiles and leguans, a row of frogs, some of which have a body like humans and stand there, ovbiously screaming at the lady on top of the fountain.
Maybe you click on the pic, to see some of the datails.

I never heared of a story or legend that would have such persons in it : One of the frogs seems to have a human body and a frog-face and is obviously sreaming to the lady on top of the fountain.
Maybe someone knows anything about thses characters - please let me know !
