Things To Do: Schloss Linderhof / Linderhof castle
Tip Rating: |
Linderhof castle was the only castle, that "mad" King Ludwig II was able to finish and live there - at least for some time.
Unfortunately the fassade is under restauration at the moment, but at least a huge tent with a print of the castle is to be seen there.

Things To Do: Linderhof - the park and Venus-temple
Tip Rating: |
The castle itself is rather small and from the terrace the king had a great view on the Venus-temple and the great garden on the terraces.
In the middle of the basin you may see golden statues - they look great today, as they had been recently restaured !

Things To Do: free entrance to the park & a fontaine each 30 min
Tip Rating: |
The entrance to the park is free, but if you intend to see the INTERIOR of the castle and the Grotto, you have to buy a ticket AT THE ENTRANCE of the park !
This is a bit confusing, as many visitors have to go back the 800 meters from the castle, where they expected to find the ticket centre.
Every 30 minutes the fontaine is working for 3 minutes in order to take pics...

Things To Do: The entrance hall
Tip Rating: |
The entrance hall is the only room that you may visit on the ground-floor. All the rest of the groundfloor was used by the servants and only the 1st floor was used by the king.
If your tour starts at the time, when the fontaine is running, your guide will remind you, to go out again on the terrace and take a pic .

Things To Do: Richard Wagner's piano
Tip Rating: |
Richard Wagner was a close friend of King Ludwig II, and very often he spent some time with the king, and used to play that piano inside one of the saloons.
Have a look for the rich golden ornaments, and the bird-sculpture on the right of it !

Things To Do: The king's bedroom - with a "king-size-bed"
Tip Rating: |
I often wondered where this expression comes from...
...HERE you may see a really "king-size-bed" - King Ludwig II was much taller than most people of his time : 192 cm
and this bed has really an extra-size and looks great mainly by it's baldachin and the big room, where it is situated.

Things To Do: the interior of the castle
Tip Rating: |
You will be really impressed by the ornaments covering all the walls and ceilings of the castle. Mostly it is a simply wooden structure, that carries the paintings and the ornaments that were finally covered with gold. According to the guide, the total of gold, used for one of the larger rooms was 4 Kilo.

Things To Do: portraits of members of the family
Tip Rating: |
On the walls of many of the smaller passage-rooms you may see portraits of relatives of the king and some souvenirs, like precious china and cups, jugs etc. These kind of decorations were first made in French castles and then copied by Ludwig's architects.

Things To Do: architecture by Franz Seitz and Christian Jank
Tip Rating: |
Franz Seitz and Christian Jank were the architects beeing responsible for the interior of Schloss Linderhof, the smallest castle of King Ludwig II. And they built the whole castle in some sort of a second Rokkoko-style, not leaving any space un-decorated all over the castle.

TravelinMartian Fri Sep 18, 2009 18:59 UTC Your tips helped a lot - thanks! Sadly, when I was at Linderhof (Sept 2009) they did not allow photography inside the palace (probably partly to facilitate the large number of people which visit ... the back-to-back guided tour was only 10 min) | Kuznetsov_Sergey Wed Nov 30, 2005 15:56 UTC Hi, Michael! Glad to meet you in Linderhof. I was fond of it this year. Your pictures helped me because I didn't make photos inside the Castle. | wcph Fri Sep 2, 2005 03:50 UTC A great page! | amsor Thu Jul 21, 2005 08:41 UTC da hat der "verrückte Ludwig" also doch eine ganze Menge schöner Bauten hinterlassen ! |
