  • Hohenschwangau is the castle just opposite the much more famous castle of Neuschwanstein.

It is a pity, most people go to the castle that seems more pretty from outside and on a perfect location on top of a mountain.

BUT Hohenschwangau is much more authentic !

  • "Mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent most of his childhood in castle Hohenschwangau.

He was very sensitive and when you make the tour through the castle you will admire lots of paintings at the inside-walls of the castle :
Old fairytales, persons of German History and Legends...

  • According to some guide-books and to the explanations of the tour-guide King Ludwig started to read all these old legends and learned about the persons, that were painted on the walls....

That way they became his obsession !

  • The tour will take about 30 minutes, and also here you have to buy the tickets down at the village of Schwangau.

You may buy a combination-ticket for both castles for 15,- €
The tour through Hohenschwangau will always be FIRST ! ( as it is very close to the ticket-box)

  • This is the entrance for the guided tour.
Your ticket will have the time indicated, and will be valid ONLY at this very time !
During the rain, they had some sort of an umbrella / sunshade for the people waiting.

When your ticket is tour 118 - put your ticket into the machine and proceed to the entrance-gate.

  • Be at the ticket-check-point in time and you will have a few minutes to take a pic of the great valley underneath the castle, with Forggensee.

This small terrace is your only chance for such a pic...

...and lets hope, YOU will have more sunshine !

The tours are very crowded and start every 5 minutes, in many cases you will have the sound and explanations of the next group as well in a short distance.

  • The castle-kitchen is opposite of the main castle, in the same building as the shop.
There you may take pics without problems, through a window , but somehow this kitchen looks a bit "artificial" to me.

  • You may easily enter the 1st court of Hohenschwangau castle and walk through the 2 other gates and leave through the back entrance, that was used by the kings, when they got there by carriage.

Watch out for the beautiful balconies, small towers and ornaments all over the castle.

I quite agree with you, Michael! This schloss at least not less interesting then more famous New schloss. But in together they formed one of the most misterious place I ever seen. I think we'll discuss this theme when you arrive to Moscow...
