Things To Do: Kehlsteinhaus was a present for A.Hitler

Kehlsteinhaus was a present by Martin Bormann on behalf of the NSDAP for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday. Thousands of workers were working for 13 months for this giant project that included a scenic mountain-road from Obersalzberg to the upper parking, the tunnel into the mountain, the lift up to the Kehlsteinhaus and the house itself. Hitler did use that building only a few times, But Eva Braun spent a lot of days here. While most of the other buildings on Obersalzberg were destroyed, this building remained untouched and it is nowadays owned by the state of Bavaria. The interior is still the same at a few places, it is used as a restaurant today and millions of people go there each year in order to enjoy the great view and also breath a bit of the history of course...

Things To Do: Kehlsteinstrasse - the road to the Eagle's Nest
Tip Rating: |

Kehlsteinstrasse is one of the most scenic alpine roads in Europe and it was built within the rather short time of just 13 months. 700 meters is the difference in hight and the road has a length of 6,5 km. There are 5 tunnels and the road is mostly just 4 meters wide. Therefore the time-table of the buses taking the tourists up and down the road are very strict and oncoming buses have to wait at the passing-places. This road was used by A. Hitler only 16 times and that road was public untill 1952. Nowadays that road is for the buses ONLY ! Pedestrians are absolutely forbidden to walk there, there is a seperate walking-path through the woods !

Things To Do: a golden elevator for the Fuehrer
Tip Rating: |

The golden elevator for the Fuehrer from the tunnel to the Kehlsteinhaus looks quite "out of time" and also the lights and the decorations of the elevator were not changed since 1933. There is an operator, who might normally also have the duty to ask for the tickets for that lift, but in fact he did not, while I was there. The ticket is included in the price of the bus, but of course some people might have walked up that distance and take the lift now for the rest of the way without having payed anything at all... Those people should actually get a ticket at the counter, where the return-times for the buses are stamped at your ticket.

Things To Do: the summit & the cross on top of Kehlstein

It is quite an easy walk to the summit & the cross on top of Kehlstein and I may highly recommend it in order to enjoy an even better panorama-view than from Kehlsteinhaus. The path is not asphalted, but easy and not slippery at all, no special hiking-shoes are necessary and many benches will be there. Spectacular is especially the view down to Koenigsee and to the Alps in the south-east of Salzburg. Something really funny I saw also close to the summit , see my last picture : A tiny little box for donations for the people who are saving lifes in the mountains.

Things To Do: the gallery of historic photos

There is a long corridor that you have to pass through, when getting out of the golden elevator and walking to the terrace and the mountains behind Kehlsteinhaus. This part of the building used to be some kind of a wintergarden, where Eva Braun and her guests used to spend the afternoon in the easy-chairs. There you may see lots of old photographs and informations in german only !Maybe that is ment as the equivalent to the guided tour that is done in english only. You will read some interesting stories and get new insights about where the name came from and how some of the strange rumours about this place had started : Like an italian diplomat, who was invited there and sayed "That looks almost like an eagle's nest" - so that is where the name came from, AND of course by the name of movie "The eagle has landed" made in USA many years after WW II.

Things To Do: Koenigssee - a lot of unspoilt nature
Tip Rating: |

Koenigssee is just about 4 km from the city-centre of Berchtesgaden and it is a Must for all lovers of unspoilt nature. Koenigssee is almost from all sides surrounded by high mountains and only from one side you may approach it at all . Only in Schoenau am Koengissee there is a small part of the lake that is accessible for cars and hikers. Many of the mountains surrounding the lake are at the same time the border to Austria, BUT no access is possible there, except for well-experienced hikers and mountain-climbers. Koenigssee is 603 meters above sea-level and it has a length of 7,7 km, a maximum width of 1,2 km and a maximum depth is 190 meters. Shipping is possible there almost all of the year, although the lake is mostly too cold in summer to swim there. Click on the link below and read more about this scenic lake in my Koenigssee-page !

Things To Do: Obersalzberg

Tip Rating: |

Obersalzberg is the area high above Berchtesgaden, where Adolf Hitler had his Berghof the bunkers and also the "Teehaus am Mooslanderkopf", the place that became his favorite place to spend his free time and meet guests untill 1944. The house on top of Kehlstein was ment to become a 2nd Teahouse, BUT in fact Hitler went there only a few times. In April 25th, 1945 480 aircrafts started to bomb the area and destroyed most of the buildings of Obersalzberg, BUT not Kehlsteinhaus. Nowadays there are just a few bunkers to be seen, and you may take a tour through them - see my local-custom-tips!

Things To Do: Christlieger - the only island of Koengissee
Tip Rating: |

Christlieger is the name of that small island that you will pass by just 200 meters from the place , where all of the ships start their cruises in Schoenau am Koenigssee. The only possibility to get there, is when you rent a rowing-boat and of course, when you swim there, BUT be prepared, the water in Koenigssee is really a lot colder than most other alpine lakes. there is a small monument of christus, a small path and nothing else than just a really romantic place in a great mountain-lake-scenery.

Things To Do: St. Bartholomae - the pilgrim-church
Tip Rating: |
An excursion to St. Bartholomae is a Must, while on vacation in Berchtesgaden ! This church is for sure one of the most-photographed churches in Bavaria, and you may find its pictures in many books and postcards. Maybe it is because of the scenic place of that church in front of the high mountain-scenery. The first church at this place dated back to the year 1134, in 1698 the lovely towers with the onion-tops were added. St. Bartholomae is the saint for the alpine farmers and shepherds and so this place became a quite popular place for the local farmers. The church looks nice from inside, but not very special, so in case that it is locked, while you are there, you did not miss a lot. The main attraction is in my opinion its lovely white facade with the red onion-towers and the great mountain-scenery behind of it ! There is NO regular church-service in St.Bartholomae !!!

robertgaz Mon May 5, 2008 12:11 UTC I would like to make St. Bartholomae my first stop and then a refreshing pils at Bier Adam! | alancollins Tue Aug 21, 2007 09:03 UTC I have been to the Kehlsteinhaus a number of times. The last time I walked up - I must have been crazy, but you do have time to photograph the views as you catch your breath. | florry Wed Feb 21, 2007 07:52 UTC Ivery much enjoyed your pages. thanks..all the best from Ireland | matcrazy1 Wed Jan 10, 2007 19:30 UTC St. Bartholomae, pilgrim-church looks fairy-like. I was going to visit this beautiful corner of Bavaria some 10 years ago but my 3 cons were: crowds, unpredictable weather (in mountians) and high prices. Maybe soon... ffter reading your wonderful page :-) |
