Hallstatt is one of the oldest villages in Austria and even in Europe. Even a whole epoche of the stone-age is called "Hallstatt-time". And in this small village of nowadays with 3000 inhabitants dead bodies will be burried in the graveyard only for a rather short time. A fe years later they will be ex-humated, and their bones will be stored inside the so called "Beinhaus" - (Bone-house) The head-bones will be decorated and the names of the dead souls will be written on it... In Hallstatt you may also see an interesting museum about the salt-mining and local customs. For more infos and pics, please have a look on my Hallstatt-page !

Steyr is the ONLY town in Austria that I know, where the main square consists ONLY of gothic and Baroque houses... Not a single modern house... Click on my main-picture to get an idea of the great architecture. In medieval times,STEYR was the only town in Austria that was alowed to produce scyths, knifes and other goods made from IRON. About 50 Km from Steyr there is the so called "Erzberg" - a mountain consisting completely of iron. The only way to transport this iron through the mountainious landscape of Austria was the river "ENNS", that runs through STEYR and enters the Danube 40 Km later. The iron was transported to Steyr by rafts, it was unloaded here and after the production of various goods, it left Steyr again to be transported into the whole world. These facts made STEYR the wealthiest town in Austria at about 1500-1700 a.d. and the 2nd biggest town of Austria. Today Steyr is well known for the productions of Steyr-Mannlicher-rifles, for the production of all Diesel-engines for BMW-cars etc.

In Mauthausen you may see the former KZ ( Konzentrationslager ) of the Nazis ! Mauthausen is about 20 Km east of Linz, and the former KZ was recently restored and is open for visitors. You will need strong nerves to see all this, as already when entering the first court ( on top of my pic ) you may get an idea of the atmosphere of the KZ. The ovens were rather small in Mauthausen, as the prisoners had to work so very hard carrying big stones up the " stairs of death " ( on the left of my pic ), that most of them were killed by the hard work and the treatment by the guards... Mauthausen of today is a lovely village with great and fancy architecture - see my last 2 pictures !

Off The Beaten Path: AUSTRIA - Hellbrunn castle and water plays
|
Tip Rating: |

|
THIS is something you should not miss, when in Salzburg ! Hellbrunn is maybe 10 Km south of the city and you may see the summercastle of the prince-archibishop who had water plays in his garden. The pic on the top shows the big table, where the prince-bishop would sit with his guests and have dinner. All of a sudden water would come out of everybody's chair ( except the bishop himself, sitting on the chair on top like that lady )
What a great fun to watch, as long you are not affected...
Things like that are to be found at many places all over the large park, that you may see only with a guided tour and with a guide, who will make sure, plenty of people will get wet... There is also a theatre of puppets (middle pic on the left) - and all puppets are moving around powered only by water-power&pressure - a masterpiece of technique in the 17th century !

This great castle was built on a small hill overlooking the plain and the lakes in the area north of Ceske Budejovice ( Budweis ) An excursion to Hluboka might take the whole day, when you want to explore all the different guided tours through the castle, the old castle kitchen, the appartments of the Schwarzenberg family, the armoury chamber, the wintergarden and riding-school, the large park... So take your time - a part of the castle was also turned into a modern hotel ! Click on my link below and read more about this great castle / palace in Czech Republic !

Plitvicka Lakes and National Park are my best memory of a vacation in my childhood. These lakes on different levels are combined with each other by lots of small or large waterfalls and a long path is leading through the national park, taking you to all the important places, including a large cave that once gave the background to an old western movie. You will find a camping-site and a hotel directely at the lake, its a paradise for children with flat and clear water. All of these old photographs were taken in 1967 by myself or any of brothers. For more pics and infos - click on my link below and have a look on my Plitvicka-page

Off The Beaten Path: Danmark - Aarhus - Arhus
|
Tip Rating: |

Aarhus is the birthplace of my Grandmother - this is why I spent some time there and mainly enjoyed it's major sight : Den Gamle By, it means "the old town" and is an open-air-museum of old townhouses and farmhouses that were taken from various parts of Danmark and were re-constructed in this open-air-museum again, forming a small village of its own, including all the facilities of a town : a river runs through it, you may see ducks and geese in the street and in the ponds. Employees, dressed in old costumes , will show you, what life was like hundreds of years ago. Everything is so peacful in this part of Arhus, although the "real life" with all of its noises of cars etc. is just a few meters away. But this museum is surrounded partly by walls, partly by bushes and trees, so you never have a chance to see a shine of the reality , when walking through "Den Gammle By"
