  • Vienna is the capital of Austria and a must for every tour through Europe. 3-5 days may be enough for the ordinary tourists, because there is really a lot to see and explore :
Take a look at my pictures :
1)Kunsthistorisches Museum , the museum of fine arts, not only for the great collections that you will see there, but also for the great architecture of the building, that once belonged to the Hofburg and the royal court of the Austrian empire.
2)Hofjagd- & Ruestkammer shows various iron-armours that were collected by the Habsburg-family at a time, when these armours were still used at several tournaments & parades and so you will see there mostly armours, whose former owners were kings, dukes and even cardinals, you will see armours of children and horses - all of them beautifully arranged, polished and looking almost brand-new.
3)The egyptian- and oriental collection in Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is in a side-wing of the building to the right at the entrancehall.
You will find various mummies there (see the mummie of a crocodile on my picture), ornate sarcophags and most of the walls of the 6 museum-halls are painted and decorated like the death-chambers in the egyptian pyramids. One of the highlights of the egyptian collection is the portrait of king Thutmosis II, who lived around 1460 B.C.
4)Naturhistorisches Museum is a great place to learn about nature in all of its aspects. My favorites were the giant crabs and it was really great to see them (next to the cafe )!

On my last picture I made my own "postcard" by the pics that I made for my Vienna-page:
    Hofburg - the emperor's winterpalace
Kapuzinergruft - all former emperors are buried there
Staatsoper - one of the best operas
The Parliament - on the famous Ringstraße
Ankeruhr - an Art Nouvau clock
    Spittelau - design by F.Hundertwasser
Schloß Schönbrunn - the summer palace
    Leopoldskirche am Spiegelgrund
    Karlsplatz and Karlskirche
    Arik Brauerhaus

  • Schloss Schoenbrunn was the residence of the Austrian emperors and is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Austria.
You can take a tour through the many halls and room of the castle, see the royal carriages, take a walk through the great park of 2 Km², walk to the Gloriette, visit Schönbrunn-Zoo and much more.
At Christmas-time dont miss to go there for the scenic X-mas-markets right in front of the palace !

  • THIS might be a place to go for people who have seen " all of Europe " already...
Somehow it is the most famous and most quoted place in Austria - with a name everybody knows, BUT most people would not pronounce it correctely :
    FOOCKING
And it does of course have NO meaning at all in German, just the name of a village in a great landscape. The name for this tiny village of only a few houses was chosen already plenty of hundred years ago as a name of a group of houses of the village "Tarsdorf" - ( at halfway from Salzburg to Braunau ).
In order to get there, search for Tarsdorf on your map !

Directions: Fùcking is in a driving-distance of about 40km from Salzburg, but it is mostly side-roads and you should calculate 1,5 - 2 hours to find it !

  • In Gmunden/Austria you will see a lovely townhall, surrounded by many baroque houses in the old centre of town. Gmunden is just a rather small town, but well known for its lake (Traunsee) and its production of china in a special "Gmundner design"
And seen here in the centre of my first 2 photographs :
Schloß Orth - a castle built on an island in Traunsee.
That lake is surrounded by mountains, about 2900 meters high

Directions: Gmunden is about halfway on the highway between Salzburg and Linz, about 10 km south of the highway.

  • Pöstlingberg in Linz is about 500meters above the city and shows a great view of the Austrian alpine panorama with mountains up to 3700 meters high. On a clear day you can take the small train of Poestlingberg-Bahn, it looks like an old tram and it is the steepest adhesion-train in the world: adhesion train means, it simply drives on the rails , but will not have a " gear " like other mountain-railways would have.
For your children there is a fairy-tale grotto not far from the basilica of Poestlingberg

  • Salzburg is a Must for various reasons :
There is the lovely old part of town - mainly with Getreidegasse
Mozart was born here and you can see his birthplace in Getreidegasse (my 2nd pic)
Hohenfeste Salzburg - the castle on the rock is worth a visit as well for a great panorama (my 3rd pic) and an interesting interior, see The " Golden room " / ( Die Goldene Stube ) with a great oven built by ornate tiles dating back to the year 1501 on my 3rd picture!
Mirabell-garden is also in the centre of town. Behind the palace Mirabell you will see a small rosary-hill, from where I took my 4th pic.
There is also a museum of Baroque paintings, a hedge-theatre, a dwarf-garden and the famous fountain with the flying horse, well known by all fans of the musical " Sound of Music
For more infos and pics - please have a look on my Salzburg-page !
    Bavaria-Card / Bayern-Ticket is valid till Salzburg Hauptbahnhof !!!

  • Gent is a lovely old town with plenty of medieval houses and there are canals and rivers flowing through all parts of the old town. Take a cruise, so will see all the beauty of the great architecture and many surprises as well : every year in July there will be Gentse Feesten - a big festival with theatre , music events and lots of different activities and also along the river you will see many sculptures like this "Lady in White" on the left shore of the river (on my 2nd pic).
At GrasLei you will see the most beautiful houses, built by rich merchants and guilds. It is always great to see, how many of these beautiful ancient houses still exist in the centre of Gent.(my 3rd pic)
On my 4th picture : Gravensteen castle
My last picture : KWAK is a special beer served in a strange and tricky glass, for more infos and pics have a look on my Gent-page...

  • Brügge is full of great medieval and baroque houses.

Step up the Belfry for a great view over town, or take a cruise through the many canals that were the main way of transport in medieval times.
And take a walk at night, when most of the buildings are lighted until midnight.
Brügge is also a great place to taste the famous Belgian chocolate that comes in quite unusual shapes - see my last picture and read more about it on my Brügge-page !

  • Antwerpen is worth a visit, if you like that special architecture of the 16th and 17th century.
See the mainsquare with its great fountain or go to the famous Rubenshouse.

And of course Antwerpen is as well a great place to taste the famous Belgian Beers.
"Elfde Gebod" (11th commandment) was my favorite - is is fully decorated with sculptures and statues from churches and has as well a great restaurant-garden opposite of the cathedral.

  • Peter Paul Rubens ( 1577-1640) was a painter and diplomat working in Italy for 6 years.
Then he returned to his hometown Antwerpen and built this house and funished it with great works of art ( by himself and Italian artists )

Take a walk in the garden of the Rubens-house and plenty of details will remind you of great villas in Italy.
