Getting TO/AROUND: Wanna drive around? ...'forgetaboutit'--not allowed- You certainly don't want to drive to Venice only to leave your car on another island - you will be arriving by bus, train or plane. So pack light and know that you can check baggage at the stations. The Venice train station will take your bags for several days, leaving you free to navigate the water bus in comfort. If you are one of those people who carry tons of luggage and unable to part with them, there is service at the train station which will deliver your luggage to your hotel for you. Port tariffs are fixed in lire. Once you have gotten rid of that nasty luggage you are more free to enjoy Venice. Getting to your hotel in Venice can be hell or expensive if you have much luggage or don't know the proper stop. The more reasonable approach to local transportation is to take the water bus--the VAPORETTO- which goes around town in 2 different directions on via the Grand Canal, the other via the Adriatic to San Marco with fewer stops. A private water taxi is always available but pricey. The first time you ride the water bus may be alittle confusing since there are different little floating stations for the different lines--read the destinations listed. Buy your ticket accordingly. Prices for the tickets have risen lately. You buy a ticket before you get on and give it to the ticket taker when he comes around to ask for it. Sometimes he doesn't ask.
