Santo Domingo is the most ancient city of the New World. It was founded in 1494 by Christopher Columbus during his second journey. In 1551 his son, Diego, appointed it as the capital city of America. In 1586 it was attacked and plundered by Francis Drake. In the course of time it had to face natural disasters. In spite of these troubles its development went on and today it's a chaotic city where about 2,5 million people live. The Colonial Zone, the oldest part of the city, is situated on the Rio Ozama's western bank, where the river flows into the Caribbean Sea. |
