The Godfather Island | An old drawing of Mt Etna seen from Taormina |
In the spring of 2002 we enjoyed a 2 weeks holiday on the isle of Sicily. With Youri, our son of 9 months by then, we stayed at two different places from where we made a number of day trips. The first week we stayed in the centre of Taormina which is located near the slopes of Mount Etna while the second week we hired an appartment just outside the lovely town of Cefalu on the northern coast, about 45 mins. driving from Palermo. This way, we were able to see the main sights of the island with our rented car.
Two weeks is by far not enough to see the island. If you're interested in history, nature and like to relax every now and then I would say at least 3 weeks would be necessary not including visits to the Eolian Islands to the north, and some of the other islands off the west and south coast.
Having seen only part 1 of The Godfather, we were also keen to visit some of the filming locations on the island and to grab some of the old "Godfather" atmosphere in sleepy villages.
