"Malta" Malta by Alice-Kees

We got to Malta in August: the hottest month of the year. Everywhere on VT I read that this would be the worst time to visit the Maltese archipel because of the high temperatures and the crowded beaches.

So... why did we still go there? The main reason we chose for Malta this time was the fact that we needed to be at a destination where we would not be tempted to go on ambitious all day tours, as we were taking our youngest son Luca (2 months) for the first time. Also, his elder brother Youri (2 yrs) would need his afternoon nap every day. So this is how our days would look like: early morning tour untill noon; aternoon nap (siesta) and from 16h30 or so late afternoon tour including diner somewhere. Malta is not very big: from the capital of Valletta you can reach almost every town or village within 30 to 40 minutes if you have a car. If not, you can use the excellent network of busses.

Our home base was Sliema, where we stayed in the Sundown Court Appartments which is quite good value, even though you do need a rented car, as the appartments are not in the centre, which is a long hot 2km walk.

• Pros:Islands of beautiful cities, lots of history surrounded by some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean.
• Cons:Not much diversity in flora and fauna.
