Pointe des Chateaux
It's not real castles! Pointe des Chateaux (Castles point) are rocs carved by the furious atlantic ocean waves. Very majestic and grandiose though! You can't swim there, but just to the left, the coral reefs naturally protect the Salines beach from the very violent waters.
You can hike to the cross dominating the Morne Pavillon and just before you arrive, there is numerous little creeks to swim in.
Blond sand, quiet waters (maybe better for kids, I eventually found it a little boring... Oh! just a little though!) but it's well animated by the hotel around it and you can stay there the whole day and dine there. Best things: order a planteur punch under a palm tree.
You can build your vacation around them! Make a round trip just to feel all of them! Remember that all the beaches are public and you can access any of them. But sometimes they are hard to find from the road...
Let me show you some of them...!
Here is this great paradisiac beach of Grande Anse, seen in Deshaies. There's a shaded parking, little shops (restaurants, bars and ice cream counters); you can play domino all day under these palms trees and maybe have the chance to meet the champion player of Guadeloupe!!!
Islands: Les Saintes, marie-Galante, La Desirade...
A lot of little islands you can visit with a boat ride. Altough I didn't had the time to go, I had really strong advise to go there. The best one being Les Saintes, a picturesque little village that you can visit on a scouter.
Always a pleasure... I went to two: the one in Ste-Anne, near the Club Med beach is in a small road and you can collect artcraft, rum, spices and clothing. This one is in Basse-Terre on the ocean and you can buy fishes, fruits, veggies, alcohol, elixirs and some artcrafts.
Directions: Ste-Anne in Grande-Terre
Basse-terre city in Basse-Terre
Unique Quality? its a volcano!!! Very high, but since we went there on a rainy day, we were in the clouds and not able to see the view that extends to all the island surrounding Guadeloupe, including Martinique. We weren't able to go to the top also. It's forbidden, but you can still go by foot, just walk around the sign that says you can't go! But it's a 2 hours walk... La Soufriere is still active, so you can smell the sulfur in the air, feel the warm wind coming from its belly and bathe in its creeks. One day, I even felt one of its heartquake on the beach. There's even an island growing in the sea from it.
Address: You can't miss it!
There is 3 waterfalls there: the first one is difficult to acces and reserved to specialists, the third one needs 2 hours of hiking and gives you 20 meters of incredible water-fall. We went to the second one, since it's easier to access, and only 1 hour round trip. But it's still a good walk on the slipery rocks. The mangrove is deep and lush and only the song of the fall gets to your ears. When you get there, the view is incredible. Very high walls of vegetation, slim fall and a little bit of sky. But please bring raincoat and leave anything that can't get wet in the car because I beleive it's always rainnig here! We were soaking wet and when we walk back, the path had become a 2 inches river. Still wonderful hike!
Directions: First and second falls: through National 1 route next to Saint-Sauveur. Third fall from Capesterre-Belle-Eau.
It's ok to stop since it's on the Dumanoir road, but don't make a detour! The white temple and coloful statues contrast thw blue sky. You can't go inside.
Address: Allee Dumanoir, Capesterre Belle-eau
Straight road bordered by ancestrals royal palm trees. The view is great! And you're surounded by bananas plantation.
Address: Capesterre Belle-eau
If there is one thing to do in Guadeloupe, it's this! A boat of about 50 peoples will take you on a 10 minutes trip to the Pigeon Island (no pigeons, I don't know why they call it that!) to visit the Cousteau sanctuary. You'll then go to the lower deck and sit in the glass bottom of the boat to admire the coral reef and numerous fishes. Incredible! Don't bother taking picture, they'll end up blue. But the view you'll have can haunt you for a while! Really, it's amazing. After about an hour, the boat will stop and you'll borrow mask, tuba and palms and jump in the sea to see up close what's out there. The captain will attracts the fishes with bread first, so they can swim right next to you. When you're back on the boat, the captain will put music on, serve you a glass of punch and sing as the little boat return to the dock. Colorful!
Address: In Bouillante, Basse-terre.
