Always A Nice Place To Be

Just A Short Hop Across The Pond

Amsterdam
Amsterdam is an easy place to visit from the UK, with frequent flights from my local airport - London Gatwick.

I first visited in June 2004 and have been back three times since. Apart from the main sights, there is always something new to discover and I just enjoy the general ambience of the city.

The people are friendly, everything is very efficient, and I like the way that society seems to be accepting of almost everything... just as long as you don't offend other people. I feel the Brits could learn a lot from the Dutch!
Amsterdam In The Snow

Many Hours at Schiphol Airport

One of my visits was in March 2005, which was supposed to be just a day trip for a change of scenery. And a change of scenery was what I got... but not in the way I'd expected.

Even while my plane was taxiing into Schiphol, I suspected that perhaps it hadn't been a good idea, when a snow plough was sent out to lead us into the gate. Still, undeterred, I caught a train into the city and actually, it was worth it because the street scenes in the snow were beautiful.

However, when I returned to the airport later that afternoon, the fun stopped because all flights had been cancelled and I was stuck there. Eventually, after much complaining, EasyJet took us to a hotel half way across Holland, where I could at least have a short rest. Then it was back to the airport, where I had to wait until late that evening for a flight back to the UK. It was apparently the worst snow storm Holland had experienced in many years!
