Salzburg to Vienna Train

Travel Via Salzburg

Austria has long been one of my favourite countries but I've never managed to get to its renowned capital city. The main reason for this is because there are no direct flights from London Gatwick, which is my local airport. However, having flown to Salzburg twice last year, I knew the Austrian rail network to be excellent so I set about planning a trip to Vienna, via Salzburg. My 'other half' decided to join me this time.

We travelled to Salzburg with Thomsonfly and due to the flight times, decided to stay in Salzburg for one night at each end of our trip... making for a more relaxed journey.

Arrived and Overwhelmed

We enjoyed the 3-hour train journey from Salzburg to Vienna very much. Unlike in Britain, the trains are comfortable, safe, reliable and good value and it was nice to sit back and watch the countryside pass by.

On arrival in Vienna, as we had heavy luggage, we took a taxi to the hotel and it was during that first ride that we realised just how impressive Vienna was going to be. The taxi ride was quite long and quite expensive but as soon as we'd got our bearings, we switched to using public transport.

Just Too Much To See

Neither of us is very fit and I wish we'd visited this marvellous city when we were younger and had more stamina. There is SO much to see and really, we only managed to scratch the surface during our 5-day stay.

It seems that literally around every corner there are buildings so beautiful they take your breath away and Vienna just oozes culture. The city is spotlessly clean, the people are polite and helpful and there is a wealth of activities to keep you busy and entertained.

As we had good weather, we missed out on many of the marvellous museums and galleries but we had a wonderful time and will definitely be visiting again soon to see some more.
