I recommend visiting Florence during winter. Of course you risk bad weather but you have the great advantage of seeing the place without hordes of tourists and without having to queue to see the main sights. As Florence isn't a huge city, it's easy to see everything on foot and it's so much nicer when the streets are not packed with tourists.

Although I've been before, this was the first trip with my digital camera. However, I was only there for a couple of days, hence the small number of tips.
