We didn't really visit Lake Charles, we bypassed it in a wide loop south to have a look at the Sabine Wildlife Refuge and Holly Beach. Holly Beach had the feel of a ghost town, abandoned for the winter, waiting for the next tropical storm. The Sabine Wildlife Refuge is a paradise for birdwatchers, we saw two herons perform what looked like a courting dance, their white feathers backlit by the sun. The flat landscape is dominated by the towering drilling equipment. I don't know if the drilling platforms were constructed here, to be towed out to the gulf, or if they are used locally. Anyway, this is a preferred byway if you get bored by the interstate and really need to see something different. |
