I've gotta say, in only a few short visits, Newport has been elevated to my 'top 5' US cities list. It is a wonderfully maintained New England nautical town. It reminds me a little bit of Annapolis, Maryland.... but as a Marylander, it hurts me to say I like Newport better.
It is a very walkable city, with great houses, ships, bars and historic hotels. Newport is also a sailing capital. Every other year there is an Annapolis-to-Newport sailing race. The harbor is filled with masts. It's not like Gloucester, MA, which is a 'commercial' nautical town.
Then there are the mansions of Newport, they have to be seen to be believed. You can see some from above in my 'Airborne Mansion Tour' travelogue.
The US Navy also has a presence here, in the form of the Naval War College, which offers graduate programs for career naval officers.
Given the right circumstance, I could certainly relocate here.....

Love, love, love Newport. In fact, I think R. I. is my favorite state. I get goosebumps when I cross the Connecticut/Rhode Island border.
