No traffic jams (hardly any cars), no private beaches..... So far no movie moguls or vacationing presidents like nearby Martha's Vineyard. Most visitors are more interested in scenery than in a trendy scene: Stone walls, bayberry-lined hiking trails, roses on the beach, beautiful cliff vistas and natural undisturbed grasslands....

Block Island is one of several islands off the southern coast of New England. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are larger and more famous ones. It is located 12 miles south of the Rhode Island coast, and 12 miles east of Long Island, NY.

I took the 'high speed ferry' from Point Judith, RI for a daytrip. Given the option of renting cars, bicycles or mopeds while I was there, I chose to walk for the six hours I was on the island.

HISTORY

Block Island was originally inhabited by a tribe of Indians who called it "Manisses" or "Isle of the Little God." In 1524, on his way to what he hoped was Asia, the Italian explorer Verrazano spied the small island and called it "Claudia", after the mother of the French king under whose flag he sailed. Before the name could catch on, along cruised Adriaen Block, a Dutch navigator, who in 1614 charted the island's location dubbing it "Adriaen's Eylant". And so it came to be called Block Island, in honor of Adriaen Block.

After looking at the Island Webb sight and hearing what you said about this "Block", I think this would be a not so far away place to spend a few days. Need to look at places to stay. Got any good ideas?

Ive been going to Block Island since I was 5 yrs old. Took some years off for school and start family and have been returning since 1986 or so. A half mile out of Old Harbor and there are just bikes and walkers, beaches and Greenway trails.

Hey, that's great! Everyone knows California, but I had never given the east coast beaches much thought ...

Only a 12 min flight? not worth it - I'd take the ferry too but don't need the Dramamine:-)
