Nightlife Spot: Holidays in Pawtuxet
Each year the local organization, PVA (which I'm very active in) entertains the community with a holiday celebration. It begins at the local Episcopal church, but is an
ecumenical service with the church choir and the wonderful voices of a local grade school chorus. The Pawtuxet Rangers then lead a procession throught the village carrying old fashioned candle lit lanters...and stopping traffic as they go. Everyone sings carrolls and the drummer keeps the cadence. Arriving at the little park at the waterfront, everyone gathers around the gazebo, the Christmas tree, and the menorrah to light up the park with merryment and applause. There are carrollers who sing in traditional costumes. Everyone makes their way to the
BoatHouse which is a little public building we all use for meetings and such. There is
Santa for the kids with little goodies and the rest of the crowd enjoys chatting with neighbors, hot chocolate and home baked cookies donated by the local parents. It's a real old fashioned community holiday...open to all. You are invited to join us next year.
