"Westport and her hidden secrets...." Westport Point by Pawtuxet
Westport Point Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 47 photos
Westport was so named because it was the westernmost port in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, first settled in 1670. The town is now mostly residential, with a large farming community. Horseneck Beach located to the north and west of Gooseberry Beach is a popular summer destination for many in the area. There are several unofficial localities within the town including Head of Westport, South Westport and Westport Point.
We ventured out in that direction on my birthday for a family day of exploration to find the brewery, winery and great beaches which would tempt us to return in the summer sun.
You can find a variety of waterfront venues here. We particularly loved the rocky town beach filled with fabulous stones that made us want to load up the car and take them home to our gardens. But the sand dunes of Horseneck Beach would be alluring in summer months, where we remembered visiting years earlier when we could cook on a hibachi while protected from the wind amongst the huge mounds of sand.
How about kayaking down a lazy little river? Colorful craft can be rented in this little corner.
Of course you find fishing boats as well as pleasure boats at the docks in Westport. Very lively as the warmer months arrive.
The tasting room at the winery was warmed by a pleasant fireplace on this cold, windy day. Belly up to the bar and sign on for a selection of the local tastings.
- Pros:Peaceful, rural, coastal, restful
- Cons:Limited facilities and businesses.... plan to relax
- In a nutshell:A Natural Delight !

What an amazing woman. What a tribute and a legacy. I think I would have been finished with the bubbly at the winery.. but what a great birthday!
She is an amazing woman! I like to think of the buildings she has saved.
What a great way to spend a birthday - sharing some of the best things in life. Looks very much the sort of place I'd love to visit. leyle
When it's your birthday, 'tis always better to have "Buzzard's in your glass" than buzzards circling overhead. Nice page, Janet.
Although blustery, you sure seemed to enjoy your time at Westport Point. Hope your birthday outing was a VERY pleasant one....enjoyed my tour, as well.
This looks like my kind of birthday - boutique brewery, winery and a good meal. And I also recall long-ago BBQs in the dunes. :)
After the brewery and the winery a little nap in the dunes along the beach... does one needs more for his birthday ?
What a grand way to celebrate your birthday, Janet. Buzzards Bay Brewing and the Winery in the Old Barn looked like great fun. Love the sand dunes. Beautiful photographs.
Hi, Janet! Congratulations on your great trip to that fabulous place...
