Historic Krakow can't be missed!!

Part of the World Heritage List and the seat of government for many years.... you can trace Poland's history for centuries in this magnificent city. It's a smashing collection of architecture, but more importantly it's a friendly, comfortable, interesting, and fun city to spend time in. The Birches of Poland

Yes, I know that everyone loves Krakow and it is truly a beautiful city. I know, too, that Poland has made great strides since they've shed their Soviet Union yoke.
However, I think I'm a farmer at heart...and I must say that I do love the countryside of Poland. The natural forest....the roadways lined with birch and farms...there is very little traffic. Roads are 2 lane in the country...as are many of ours....but they are quiet. My biggest irritation was when I was behind a farmer who took a little too long to move his tractor and trailer load of turnip. Some who commute into NYC or Boston every day would not mind such a problem.

Winter apples, Cabbages and Mistletoe ~ 2003

Here we were in late October driving past orchards laden with brilliant red apples. . . still on the trees. Whatever the type of apple it was...it looked delicious. Ours are not grown so late into the season.
The cabbages are certainly abundant along these roads. Here in the background is another house style which hasn't been pictured here before. It looks more modern. They use a lot of stucco. The smaller building close to the cabbage is just a storage shed.
As we drove along the country roads from Kolbuszowa towards Kazimierz Dolny, Gosia pointed out the mistletoe up in the tall trees. They are a parasite...and I had never seen them growing before. I guess they can be found in the US, but not anywhere near my home.

Colorful country homes of Poland ~2003

Just north of Kolbuszowa we came upon a section where the homes were slightly different from what we had been seeing. They are perhaps a little older than the stucco we saw earlier. These are a wood frame construction with each house painted slightly different from the rest. I understand that during the Communist era, the homeowners were allowed to choose from 3 styles of houses so there wouldn't be any one house that stood out above the rest. These appear to have metal roofs.
Seemed strange to have a public pay phone in this location. The road was long and quiet with not very many houses or businesses along the way.
Two neighbors chatting by the side of the road....late fall...peaceful.
