Favorite Thing: Tossed about like children's toys, the remnants of ancient temples lie strewn around the ground. . . waiting for further study or identification or just because they are treasured as historic elements. Hard to imagine most cities assigning this valuable city space to architectural remnants of the past. I'm so glad the Italians have been gentle with their history.

Favorite Thing: The history and story of the Spanish Steps was lost to me when I saw these women do their little performance. Maybe you will be lucky enough to see something going on there when you visit. It's a great spot to do some people watching, post card stand near by and a natural photo op.

Favorite Thing: Some of my favorite colors are on the stucco buildings of Rome. There is something very special about the light just before sunset... which brings out the color of these umber and sienna structures. Architecture doesn't have to be grand memorials for me...I find such satisfaction in seeing simpler buildings which are done well and contribute so much to the atmosphere of the city. I'm not sure if it is the pigment in the paints or the rays of the sun that make these sights so special to me, but it's that warm feeling and color that stays with me long after the visit.

Favorite Thing: You'll eventually be totally saturated with art and history, and you'll have to stop once in a while to simply reflect on what you've been looking at. So much to take in all at once. Maybe that's why there are so many cappuccino bars and gellato stands along the streets. You should take a break now and then...relax... get ready for the next amazing and fantastic sight you are about to see.

Favorite Thing: Walking in the neighborhoods, we encountered several homes we found striking in their colors. So much so, that my daughter later used some of these colors when she painted her apartment. I notice how the stucco buildings can look so different in each country...using the method of building because of the climate..and yet differing greatly in their detailing and colors.

Favorite Thing: I include this photo to give an idea of the density of art and architecture within the city. It seems that they have packed it tightly with as much art as anyone could possibly absorb. It just keeps on coming. I felt like a wet sponge..at total capacity...every night.

Favorite Thing: Our Italian cab driver insisted we must see ONE MORE THING before leaving Rome ... and so on our way to the airport he drove up into the hills to this door. You must look through a little hole in the gate to a wonderful garden...and you can see the Vatican perfectly framed in the distance. It's a MUST, he says. The gate and garden were designed for this....and it would be a pity if noone was taken there to see it after all that planning. :-)
