Salt Lake City - Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and by far the largest city in the state. It's also the headquarters for the Mormon Church. The Great Salt Lake and the impressive architecture and culture of the Mormon Church are the two most famous attractions for visitors. There is much more to see and do though because of the city's spectacular setting at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The mountains offer great recreational opportunities including good hiking in the summer and some of the best skiing in North America in the winter. The population of Salt Lake City is only around 200,000, but about 1.2 million people live in the Salt Lake City-Ogden metro area. That's more than half the population of Utah! This city is hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics and there's a lot of construction going on in preperation. I've been to Salt Lake City quite a few times as a starting and ending point for tours that I lead for Crossroads Adventures (www.xroadsusa.com). The tours went to Southern Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, the Canadian Rockies, and the Northwest. I also lived in an apartment in the Avenues for a month (March - April '97) to run some ski tours in the area.
