I thought I'd add this picture that I recently took in my back yard. Racoons aren't regular visitors in my yard, so this was kind of special. If you're looking to escape from NYC for a day or a weekend, Long Island has some worthwhile things to see and do. There are some great sandy beaches on the south shore including those in the Hampton's as well as on the barrier beaches of Fire Island and along Ocean Parkway. There are recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, cycling, mountain biking, canoeing, and golf. Long Island also has plenty of historical sites of interest such as the Bethpage Restoration Village and Sagamore Hill which was Teddy Roosevelt's home. The north shore is generally where you'll find the million $ mansions moreso in Nassau where you have the Gold Coast of Long Island. People often assume that if you live here you have money, but the majority of residents are middle class. Long Island stretches for about 100 miles and has a population of over 1 million. With this many people you can be assured there are plenty of options for nightlife as well as some very good restaurants. Long Island consists of 2 counties: Nassau and Suffolk. It's quite crowded but open space increases the more east you go (away from NYC). All the way out east in Suffolk County there are even farms and wineries. |
