Armenia is a small country, yet it has a rich culture, fantastic cuisine, many interesting sights both natural and man made and plenty of experiences for the traveller to enjoy. It's history is long. Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity. It's recent history is horrific, the Armenian Genocide which occurred from 1915 in which an estimated 2 million people where killed at the hands of the Turkish Ottomans. Turkey still denies this happened to this day. Yet the Armenians have grown stronger and are a proud race and proud of their country and all that it has to offer. The capital Yerevan is incredibly hot in summer. I remember seeing the mercury around 42 degrees to 45 degrees centigrade every day that I was there in July. However, strip away the summer heat and the city is quite lively and vibrant. It is a surprisingly enjoyable place to visit. If the heat is too much, escape to Lake Sevan. It is considerably cooler here and this alpine lake is less than 2 hours drive from Yerevan. Be sure not to miss the Holy See of Echmiadzin-the centre of the Armenian Orthodox Church. You will see the supposed spearhead that was used to lance Christ whilst he was on the cross. However, the greatest religious experience you will have in Armenia is the Geghard Monastery. Like something out of Indiana Jones the monastery has been carved out of the stone! |
