Timor Lorosae/Timor Leste/East Timor

Timor Leste Schoolgirls-Baucau
I spent 4 days in East Timor which was clearly not enough, however, I was able to gain a glimpse into this very unique country- the newest in the world!
If you plan to come here I suggest a minimum of a week ideally 2 weeks. The roads in East Timor are quite poor. It takes you hours to get anywhere. For example-by far the best stretch of road in the country is from Dili to the second largest city -Baucau, a journey of 115kms. Sticking to the speed limit (which is not difficult), means the journey will take 3 hours absolute minimum. The rest of the roads are far worse.

So is East Timor a worthwhile tourist destination yet? Well if you are used to constant electricity, plenty of accommodation and eating options, air conditioned coaches, having access to a can of coke when you need- forget it! This to me is the appeal of this place, it is so untouched, so raw, if this appeals to you than be sure to visit soon.
The countryside is magnificent. Houses made from bamboo and wood, with thatched palm rooves, dot the whole of East Timor. It is mountainous, suprisingly so, yet the toughness of the mountains give way to some of the most serene and picture perfect beaches you are ever likely to see. The water so clean and clear, show the pristine reefs available- divers should be visiting in droves.

It is easy to get caught up in the political debate that still ensues in this "Democracy". I did! However, I no longer get caught up in such matters (Hence what was previously posted here is now deleted). Travel with an open mind and just enjoy everything that East Timor has to offer.

Subsequent events in East Timor have proven your predictions to be true! Wow, what a trip though! Your photos and tips reminded me so much of Papua New Guinea - even having to watch out for animal 'payback' if you hit one!
