What Turkmenistan is- Desert | Karakum Sand Storm-Turkmenistan |
This picture summises what the overwhelming majority of Turkmenistan looks like! Desert. This picture was taken on the overnight train from Turkmenbashi to Ashgabat. The Sand Storm is starting to build here. It got a lot worse, and to make matters worse again, the window on our compartment would not shut. Despite the best efforts of the Train guards, the 3 people in our compartment ended up getting caked in Dust as the storm lasted for an hour. It was so bad we had to put our faces into the seats so we could breathe. However, there is one extremely worthwhile event to see in Turmenistan. The Tolkuchka Bazaar. Have a look at my Travelogue. |
| There he is again!-Ashgabat-Turkmenistan |
| | The dictatorial President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, has decreed by law that every building must have a photo of him, and the nations flag. After a while you see so much of him it drives you a bit crazy! |
| What a Bazaar Life!-Tolkuchka Bazaar-Turkmenistan |
| | The best reason to visit Turkmenistan is to see the Tolkucka Bazaar. The Tolkuchka (Russian for "push") Bazaar is outside of Ashagabat a couple of kilometers. It is in full swing on Sundays, but we went on the Thursday, which was still very impressive anyway! See the travelogue and tips for more details. Everything is sold here from Camels to Cars, Soap to Sink Stoppers! It is absolutely enormous! |
