Dublin Castle: Dublin Castle

  • If you are thinking another boring castle you will be wrong. From the outside it is more like a palace and alot of the rooms inside are palacial in style. The most fascinating part of the castle is underground - Excavations of the former Powder Tower, which reveal a chunk of the old city walls and moat, are an unusual sight.
The Castle was the centre of British power in Ireland, built on the orders of King John in the early 13th century, for many centuries. It is a good place to start a trip to Ireland to get the run down on Irish history.

  • Call me strange but it is one of my favourite attractions in the world! I just love this Pedestrian Bridge and wish there were more like it built around the world. It has charm and personality, it is an individual!
The Bridge is the accepted symbol of Dublin. The Ha'penny Bridge (offically Wellington Bridge) was opened in 1816. It gets it's name from the toll that used to be paid when crossing the river. There is now another pedestrian bridge on the Liffey. The Millenium bridge was opened in 2000.

  • The GPO was the main scene for the 1916 Easter Rising. The Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army took control of the building on Easter Monday, 24th of April, and proclaimed the new Irish Republic. After a week of heavy attack from the British, the surviving Irish were forced to flee. The GPO was built in 1818.

Trinity College: The Book of Kells Exhibition-Do Not Miss This!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best exhibitions I have seen anywhere in the world! The Book of Kells is a 9th Century manuscript of the Gospels, renowned world-wide for its rich and varied illustrations. It is on display in the Old Library in Trinity College. The current exhibition in the Colonnades, 'The Book of Kells. Picturing the Word' places this national treasure in its historical and cultural context. The Old Library is open 7 days a week. Admission from 9.30- 17.00 Monday to Saturday,9.30 to 16.30 on Sunday (June-September) and 12.30-16.30 on Sundays (October-May). There is a charge for admission, however, it is well worth it. The book is in near perfect condition, which is amazing given its age. The text is incredibley ornate.

Monuments / Statues: Charles Stewart Parnell Monument

  • Charles Stewart Parnell was the son of a Protestant landowner who organised the rural masses into agitation against the ruling Landlord class to seek the 3 Fs: Fixity of Tenure, Freedom to Sell and Fair Rent.
In the xecond half of the 1800's, violence flared in the countryside but Parnell preferred to use parliamentary means to achieve his objectives and the result was a series of Land Acts which greatly improved the conditions under which the Irish agricultural class toiled.
He is most rememberedfor the following quote which is engraved on the memorial:
'No man shall have the right to fix the boundary to the march of a Nation'.
