  • The fabulous covered souqs are the city's main attractions. This labyrinth extends over several hectares, and once you're under the vaulted stone ceiling you're whisked away to another world. Swoon to the sweet scents of cardamom and cloves, gag at the hanging carcasses in the meat souq - it's all here. Most of the markets were built in the Ottoman era, but some date back to the 13th century.
Very easy to get lost here, and lose track of time!

  • This Umayyad mosque was commenced here in 715. The history of the place is fascinating. It has even functioned as a Roman temple and a Byzantine church.

  • The mosque is arranged around a vast courtyard that connects to different areas of the mosque that are placed behind thecolonnaded arcade. The courtyard is famous for its black and white stone pavement that forms complex geometric patterns. The courtyard holds the two ablutions fountains.

I have been to Aleppo twice but still haven't seen the Great Mosque. It is closed for reparations. Nice tips!
