  • Well it goes without saying really. The Treasury building is the first building you come across as you walk down through the canyon and out into the valley (as pictured). It is a highlight, if not for some the highlight!

    The Monastery: The Monastery
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is also an impressive sight like the Treasury that has been protected well from the elements. You will however, need your hiking legs for this one.

  • Amazing to think that the High Place and the Obelisk where carved out of the surrounding stone rather than actually built and placed here. This is the place where sacrifices where carried out.
It is a rugged but brief walk up to this place but it is worth it as it provides an impressive panorama of the whole of Petra.

  • Upon his death in 106 AD, the Roman Emperor Trajan claimed the Nabatean Kingdom and set about transforming it with the usual plan of a colonnaded street, baths, and the common trappings of modern Roman life. The Romans built a Triumphal Arch spanning the Sig (the entrance to Petra) and many free standing buildings and monuments, though these continued to show a Nabataean flair.

  • Note the color in the rocks as you come down to the Garden Tomb. To the right of this tomb was a large dam that provided water for an ancient garden that decorated the front of this monument.
