  • I decided to venture into this wonderfully refreshing alpine lake, however, my body just could not handle the cool temperature! Along the Peninsula there are popular beach areas, however, there are other beach areas popular in front of the main town area. There are plenty of places to camp here as well. There are different types of accommodation options here.
You must try the local "Ishkan" whilst here. This is trout. Other freshwater fish are available.

  • Whilst visiting the monastery here, I was fortunate enough to come across a service. The traditional chants where quite moving in this picturesque setting. It is one of the few that still operates as a monastery.
The monastery was founded in 874 by King Ashot I. Two churches remain, St. Arakelots and Astvatsatsin. The island monastery was, according to historians of the time, used both for worship and pilgrimage and as a place of exile for Armenian noblemen who had fallen into disgrace. Of course it no longer exists on an island thanks to the wonderful Stalin and his idea to drain the lake, dropping the water level 30 metres.
