View of The Peninsula and "Island"-Sevan-Armenia
Lake Sevan covers 5% of the total area of Armenia! It is the highest and largest lake in the Trans Caucusus region. The waters are a wonderfully refreshing deep turquoise in colour. Being an alpine lake the water is refreshing enough anyway. Whilst visiting in June I decided to go for a swim and was in and out within a few seconds! A bit too cold for me.
Distant Snow Capped Mountains around Lake Sevan
The lake was drained for irrigation and hydroelectrical reasons under one of Stalin's great visions. The level of the lake dropped 30 metres. You can see the old level marked clearly on all the surrounding hills and mountains. The monastery here built on an island became linked to the mainland (pictured above). On this new piece of land appeared a beach, then restaurants and accommodation. There are plenty of facilities here to stay and enjoy the lake. The beaches are quite pleasant and the restaurants provide excellent local fare.
